Bakersfield, CA - The Bakersfield Condors of the West Coast Hockey League have recent changes to the roster, signing rookie goaltender Joel Martin and releasing two players. Martin replaces goaltender Fredrik Jensen on the roster, who was waived yesterday. Defenseman Andre Allard was also waived. Netminder Kevin St. Pierre was placed on the 14-day IR retroactive to December 28th.
Martin, 20, had been playing junior hockey this season with the Vancouver Giants in the Western Hockey League. He spent last season with the Tri-City Americans in the WHL, recording a solid .913 save percentage and a 3.35 GAA. The native of Three Hills, Alberta played 108 games at the junior level between the pipes over three seasons, with a career save percentage of .903 and a 3.16 GAA. As a rookie with Lethbridge in 2000-01, he finished fifth in the WHL in GAA at 2.80.
Allard played in seven games this season, and was a +3 with four penalty minutes. Jensen competed in eight games, compiling a record of 0-6-2 with a 3.65 goals against average and an .879 save percentage.
St. Pierre suffered a groin pull in the December 27th game in Fresno. He was pulled from the contest and sat out the game on the 28th. He will be eligible to come off IR on Saturday, January 11th.
The Condors are in action on Friday night against the San Diego Gulls. Game time is 7:00pm from the San Diego Sports Arena. All Condors games can be heard live on KGEO AM 1230, with Kevin Bartl handling the play-by-play. "Condors Countdown" starts 15 minutes prior to game time. The Condors next home game is against the Fresno Falcons on Friday, January 10th at 7:00pm.
Single-game tickets are available through the Centennial Garden Box Office, which opens at 10:00am Monday through Saturday. Condor Droppings. . . Career stats for Martin to follow... "The Condors Coach's Show" takes place tonight from 6-7pm at the Holiday Inn Select. This week's guests are winger Denis Ladouceur and Jon Sorg, as well as Head Coach Paul Kelly. The show can also be heard live on KGEO AM 1230, and call-ins are welcome at 631-1230... The California Condors Recovery Program released an adult California condor back to the wild in Los Padres National Forest this week, after a six-week stay at a zoo hospital. It was receiving medical treatment for lead poisoning, and is back to full health. The number of California condors is now at nearly 200, after bottoming out at 15 in the mid-1980s.
