Squirrels Can Only Delay Defeat in Trenton, 3-2

Trenton, NJ - The Richmond Flying Squirrels (44-41) rallied in the ninth inning only to fall in the 10th, 3-2, to the Trenton Thunder (48-39) at ARM & HAMMER Park on Friday night. The extra-inning game was the fourth in the last 10 for Richmond. They have played nine total extra-inning games this season (3-6).
The game-winning run was supplied by Rob Segedin, who delivered a walk-off single to the left-field corner that scored Jake Cave. Cave had been walked by righty Jose Casilla (2-5), who took the loss for Richmond.
Right-handers Joe Biagini and Brady Lail, both Eastern League All-Stars, dueled through the first four innings. Biagini was the first to blink in the fifth however, conceding Trenton their first run. Tony Renda and Danny Oh contributed back-to-back singles to put runners at the corners with nobody out. Biagini then committed a throwing-error on an attempted pickoff at first base. Renda scored for a 1-0 lead. The run later became earned.
The Thunder tacked on a run in the seventh. Again it was Renda leading off with a single. He was bunted to second base and scored for a 2-0 advantage when Ali Castillo cracked an RBI single to center field.
Lail baffled the Squirrels over his longest outing of the season - 7 2/3 innings. He conceded just three hits, walked two and struck out three. In two starts, he has allowed Richmond just one run in 14 2/3 innings. He did not factor in the decision.
Biagini worked seven innings to a no-decision. He allowed two earned runs on eight hits, walked none and struck out three.
Righty Cesar Vargas recorded the final out of the eighth and fellow right-hander Mark Montgomery came on for the ninth. He walked Hunter Cole with one out, but had the Squirrels down to their final out when Ricky Oropesa came to the plate. Oropesa sliced a game-tying two-run home run just fair inside the left-field foul pole. Oropesa's 10th of the season effectively sent the game into extra innings.
Montgomery (2-1) rebounded to work a perfect 10th inning and ultimately earned his second win of the year.
Game two of the four-game series is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Saturday night at ARM & HAMMER Park. Richmond RHP Joan Gregorio (1-1, 4.08) will make the start against Trenton RHP Jaron Long (0-0, ---).
