
Rock Cats Hit New Hampshire Hard at Home; Defeat Fisher Cats 9-1

New Britain, CT - The New Britain Rock Cats defeated the New Hampshire Fisher Cats by the score of 9-1 at New Britain Stadium on Friday evening.
The Rock Cats' offense came ready to hit and showed it in the opening frames against New Hampshire starter RHP Murphy Smith. The righthander allowed five runs on six hits over the first two innings, highlighted by a two-run double by LF Mike Tauchman and RBI single from 1B Will Swanner in the bottom of the first and a double off the bat of CF Noel Cuevas that scored two in the second inning.
Fisher Cats' CF Dalton Pompey dropped a single in from of Tauchman in the top of the second to score DH Emilio Guerrero, making it a 5-1 contest after two.
New Britain tacked on another run in the bottom of the fourth on a SS Pat Valaika single that scored 2B Zach Osbourne. Osbourne reached first after being hit by Smith to lead off the inning.
Valaika capped off the Rock Cats scoring with a two-run single off of New Hampshire reliever RHP Cory Burns in the seventh. The infielder's third hit of the night scored both C Jan Vazquez and DH Charley Thurber, who had a multi-hit performance as well.
Smith was reached for six runs, all earned, on eight hits before turning over to the bullpen after four innings. He falls to 1-1 on the season.
Carpenter put together a very strong outing, pitching around just the one run. The southpaw allowed five hits while walking two and striking out five over seven innings of work. He improves to 5-9 through 18 starts this season.
Saturday night's 7:05 start sees RHP Bryan Evans gets the call for New Britain and he will square off against LHP John Anderson.
