(Pawtucket, RI) - Matt Spring's walkoff single gave Pawtucket starter Brian Johnson a complete-game shutout win in the opener but Buffalo scored three two-out runs in the fifth inning of the nightcap as the PawSox and Bisons split a doubleheader Tuesday night. Pawtucket took the opener 1-0, while Buffalo earned a come-from-behind 3-1 victory in game two in front of 3,796 fans at McCoy Stadium.
The PawSox (9-4) were held hitless through the first six innings of the seven-inning contest in game one by Bisons starter Andrew Albers (1-2), but Travis Shaw doubled on the first pitch of the seventh and was pinch-run for by Quintin Berry. One batter later the DH Spring lined his game-winning hit to center to give Pawtucket its fifth-consecutive win.
Johnson (2-1) was equally brilliant to Albers, holding Buffalo (8-4) to just two soft singles in seven full innings of work. The left-hander walked only one and struck out five as the left-hander retired the final 14 batters he faced.
A wild pitch by Bisons starter Scott Copeland (2-0) allowed Shaw to score the first run in game two with two outs in the bottom of the fourth. Buffalo responded quickly however, recording four hits and scoring three times against PawSox starter Keith Couch (1-2) in the fifth.
With a runner at third and two outs, Chris Dickerson grounded an infield RBI single to plate Munenori Kawasaki with the tying run. Matt Hague followed with a single that put two runners on base, and Andy Wilkins chased Couch from the game with a go-ahead RBI single to right.
Noe Ramirez then entered in relief, but Deven Marrero's fielding error on a grounder hit by Chris Colabello plated Hague with the third and final run of the inning. Copeland lasted six full frames for the Bisons and allowed only four hits and one run, while Bo Schultz tossed a 1-2-3 seventh to earn his third save.
The PawSox were held to only two runs and six hits for the night, and have now scored only two runs in the last 33 innings against Buffalo pitching. Shaw had three of the team's six hits in the twin bill, with two of them doubles.
The rubber match of the three-game series and finale of Pawtucket's seven-game homestand will be a matinee on Wednesday afternoon with first pitch at 12:05pm. Right-hander Steven Wright (0-0, 5.40) is expected to start for the PawSox while the Bisons counter with lefty Randy Wolf (2-0, 0.90).
