Louisville Bats News Release

TOLEDO, OH - The Louisville Bats (5-6) and Toledo Mud Hens (7-4) broke out their Louisville Sluggers in tonight's 13-8 loss for the Bats. The 21 combined runs were the most runs scored since the Bats and Clippers combined for 22 runs, on May 31st last season.

Pitching for the Bats was left-hander David Holmberg (0-3, L), who now has his second loss to Toledo this season. Louisville faced the Detroit Tigers' top pitching prospect, right-hander Buck Farmer (2-0, W). Before tonight's game, Farmer had allowed just one earned run in 10 innings pitched. In tonight's contest, Farmer allowed eight runs, six of them earned.

Toledo batted through the order in the first inning scoring seven runs off of seven hits. Holmberg faced 12 batters in that inning throwing 45 pitches. The seven runs by Toledo marked the most runs allowed by the Bats in the first inning of a game since allowing eight in Columbus on August 29, 2011 in an 11-2 loss. The most runs allowed in an inning in franchise history was 11, surrendered last year in the fifth inning of a 14-8 loss at Norfolk on May 13.

The Bats tallied their first runs of the game in the second inning by an RBI triple to the right field wall by second baseman Irving Falu, scoring two. Toledo did not let up as they scored three more in the third inning off of a series of run scoring hits from Bryan Holaday, Daniel Fields, and Dixon Machado.

Right-hander Pedro Villarreal relieved Holmberg in the bottom of the third and finished the inning with a fly and ground out. The final line on Holmberg was 2 1/3 innings pitched, while giving up 10 runs, all earned off of 12 hits, walking two batters, and striking out one.

The Bats cut the lead in half, by scoring three runs in the top of the fourth inning. Chris Dominguez led off the inning with a double, followed by a single from Donald Lutz, and an RBI double from Yorman Rodriguez scoring both runners. Falu got his third run of the game hitting a sacrifice fly to left field scoring the fifth run for the Bats.

Runs continued to cross the plate in the fifth as the Bats and the Mud Hens both notched three more each for a final score of 13-8. Eight Mud Hens knocked in at least one run in the game, Jason Krizan being the only batter without an RBI.

Tomorrow the Bats will play game two in Toledo at 10:30 a.m. before heading to Columbus. The probable pitchers are right-hander Dylan Axelrod for the Bats and left-hander Kyle Ryan for Toledo.
