Gwinnett Rallies by Tides in Eighth

April 22, 2015 - International League (IL1)
Norfolk Tides News Release

The Gwinnett Braves rallied with two eighth inning runs to top the Tides 3-2 Wednesday night at Harbor Park.

With Norfolk leading 2-1 in the eighth, pinch-hitter Adonis Garcia opened up the frame with a double off of Chris Jones (0-1). After a hit batter and an infield single loaded the bases, Todd Cunningham chopped a two-run single over third baseman Michael Almanzar and into left field to give the Braves a 3-2 advantage.

Norfolk attempted to rally by putting runners on base in both the eighth and ninth innings, but three Braves relievers kept the Tides from tying the score as Gwinnett picked up its second consecutive one-run victory.

Dariel Alvarez homered and singled to lead Norfolk's eight-hit effort, the second straight contest in which the 26-year-old outfielder has belted a homer as part of a two-hit night. Over his last eight games, Alvarez has now hit .324 (11-34) with two home runs and four RBI.

Norfolk starter Zach Davies turned in an impressive outing in his Harbor Park debut, as he allowed just one run on four hits over six innings of work. Davies, who now owns a 1.80 ERA through three starts this season, walked one and struck out five while throwing 57 of his 84 pitches for strikes.

Todd Cunningham drove in all three runs for Gwinnett as he collected three hits in four at-bats. Cunningham is now 7-for-12 over the first three games of the series.

The two clubs conclude their four-game set Thursday afternoon at Harbor Park, with first pitch slated for 12:05 pm. Knuckleballer Eddie Gamboa (0-1, 6.30) gets the start for Norfolk against right-hander Matt Wisler (0-1, 3.72).

Notes: Steve Clevenger played second base in the contest, his first appearance at second base since appearing in 63 games there for Class-A Boise in 2006. Clevenger did not have a ball hit to him in the game...Pedro Beato did not allow a run over two relief innings, a stint that involved escaping a bases-loaded, no-out threat in the eighth inning...Norfolk has lost consecutive games for the first time this season...The loss was Norfolk's first this season when leading after seven innings...Nolan Reimold singled and scored in the first inning.
