Syracuse Mets News Release
Syracuse, NY (April 22, 2015) - The Syracuse Chiefs, Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, the Rochester Red Wings at NBT Bank Stadium on Wednesday afternoon. Jason Martinson, Michael Taylor and Ian Stewart had a home run apiece in the loss. Rochester rallied from a five-run deficit early in the ball game to defeat the Chiefs by four in the third-game of a four-game set.
Syracuse (5-9) took a commanding lead early, as the Chiefs broke out of the gate with four runs in the first inning. All four of those runs were scored with two outs. Mark Minicozzi started the two-out rally with an infield single to move Michael Taylor, who singled to open the inning, to second base. Ian Stewart followed with a triple down the right-field line to plate a pair to open the scoring for Syracuse. Jason Martinson followed Stewart with his second Triple-A home run and second homer in as many days to give the Chiefs a 4-0 lead at the end of the first.
The Chiefs hit two more homers in the following two frames against Jason Wheeler to increase their lead to five at the end of the third inning. Michael Taylor hit a two-out homer over the left-field fence in the bottom of the second. Ian Stewart added another RBI to his tally with a two-out home run of his own in the bottom of the third. At the end of three, the Chiefs had a comfortable 6-1 lead.
The momentum completely shifted in the fourth inning as the Red Wings hitters got to starter Taylor Hill in the top half of the frame. Hill put the first two runners on in the inning but seemed to settle down as he recorded the next two outs. Two-out hitting was the theme of the afternoon for both teams as Rochester proceeded to score five runs with two away against the Syracuse starter. Doug Bernier started the rally with an RBI single to left. Aaron Hicks plated two more Red Wings with his first of two extra-base hits on the afternoon. Then, Eddie Rosario tied the score at 6-6 with a two-run home run.
Each team plated a run in the fifth inning to make the score 7-7 after five innings of play. But Syracuse could not keep up with the Rochester offense, as the Twins Triple-A affiliate took the lead for good in the top of the sixth inning. The Red Wings batted around for the second time in three innings and plated four more runs to take an 11-7 lead. Eddie Rosario led off the sixth with a double and immediately scored on a Josmil Pinto single to give Rochester an 8-7 lead. After a Reynaldo Rodriguez double, Danny Ortiz drove in a run on a groundout to second. Jose Martinez proceeded next with an RBI single to make it 10-7. Bernier capped off his three-RBI afternoon with his third RBI single in three trips to the plate to make it a four-run Red Wing lead.
Rochester (7-6) never looked back as the Red Wings bullpen held the Chiefs scoreless for the final four and two-thirds innings of the game after Wheeler was pulled in the fifth. In fact, the Red Wing pitching staff did not allow an earned run after the Ian Stewart third-inning home run.
Syracuse and Rochester play the final game of a four-game series Thursday afternoon at 1:05. Chiefs right-hander Scott McGregor will try and salvage a split of the series against Red Wings right-hander Mark Hamburger.
