LOWELL, MA - Bryan Muniz went 2-for-3 with a double, Bobby Wernes went 3-for-3 with an RBI, and Kevin McCanna, Ralph Garza, and Zac Person combined to strike out nine batters while allowing only five hits, but the Tri-City ValleyCats fell to the Lowell Spinners 2-1 at Edward A. LaLacheur Park, in Lowell, Mass., on Tuesday night.

The Spinners took the lead in the bottom of the first, when Lowell right fielder Tate Matheny drove home centerfielder Luis Alexander Basabe with a sacrifice fly.

Tri-City managed to tie the game in the top of the second inning, when second baseman Kolbey Carpenter doubled to left field, then scored on a single by Wernes. However, Lowell jumped back on top in the bottom half of the second, when Chad De La Guerra doubled, then scored on a base hit by Josh Ockimey, giving the Spinners a 2-1 lead.

That score stood pat the rest of the contest, as both teams were unable to score after the second inning.

McCanna, who got the start for the 'Cats, pitched a season-high four frames. He also struck out four batters, as he has now registered at least three strikeouts in three straight appearances.

Garza came on to start the fifth inning, and struck out five batters, while allowing only two hits in three scoreless frames, before Zac Person, entered the game, and pitched a 1-2-3 eighth inning.

Lowell and Tri-City will waste no time facing off in game two of this three-game set, with the second contest coming on Wednesday, at 11:05 a.m. Getting the start for the ValleyCats in the morning affair will be RHP Rogelio Armenteros (0-1, 5.32), with LHP Javier Rodriguez (0-1, 7.27) on the mound for the Spinners.
