Vermont Lake Monsters News Release

BURLINGTON, VT --- Erik VanMeetren hit a two-run homer in the top of the eighth inning and three Auburn pitchers combined on a six-hit shutout with no walks and 12 strikeouts as the Doubledays blanked the Vermont Lake Monsters 2-0 in the first of a three-game New York-Penn League series at historic Centennial Field on Tuesday night.

The game was scoreless until the eighth when Vermont reliever Chris Kohler walked Jakson Reetz to open the inning and one-out later VanMeetren lined a over the fence in leftfield to account for the only runs of the game. It was the first home run of the year for Van Meetren and the league-leading 17th allowed by Lake Monster pitchers. Vermont is now 1-11 this season when its opponent hits at least one home run in the game.

Auburn starter Jefry Rodriguez scattered five hits over six innings with six strikeouts, while reliever Andrew Lee (1-0) struckout five in two one-hit innings for the win. That included strikeouts of Steven Pallares, Richie Martin and Mikey White in the bottom of the eighth inning before Tommy Peterson tossed a 1-2-3 ninth inning for his third save of the year.

Vermont pitchers were just as strong before the two-run homer. Starter Bubba Derby allowed one hit with one walk and one strikeout in his three scoreless innings, while Kohler (2-1) allowed just two hits over his first four innings of relief before allowing the walk and homer in his fifth inning of work and finished with seven strikeouts for the night.

The shutout was the third of the season against Vermont, which also lost its third straight game for just the second time this year (also lost the first three games of season June 19-21) to all six games under .500 (12-18) for the first time overall. Mikey White went 0-for-4 to snap his league-best 17-game hitting streak for the Lake Monsters, while Nick Collins was 1-for-4 to extend his hitting streak to nine straight.

Vermont will look to avoid a four-game losing streak when they host Auburn (13-17) on Wednesday night starting at 7:05 pm as the Lake Monsters celebrate Military Appreciation Night at Centennial Field.
