Spikes' Perez Named NYPL Pitcher of the Week

(STATE COLLEGE, PA) - Major League Baseball Advanced Media announced on Monday evening that State College Spikes pitcher Juan Perez has been named the New York-Penn League's Pitcher of the Week for the week of July 13-19, 2015.

Perez garnered the honors after tying a Spikes single-game record with 10 strikeouts against the Batavia Muckdogs on Saturday over the course of seven shutout innings. The right-hander allowed just two hits and a walk during that time. A native of San Felipe, Venezuela, Perez is 3-1 with a 2.70 earned run average this season.

Perez was signed by the Cardinals as an international free agent on August 20, 2011, and started his professional career with the Dominican Summer League Cardinals in 2012. After a season with the Rookie-level Gulf Coast League Cardinals in 2013, Perez pitched under current Spikes manager Johnny Rodriguez at Johnson City last year. The righty earned the start in Game 1 of the Appalachian League Championship Series, and struck out 10 batters over six innings on that occasion in helping his club to the Appy League title.

Spikes fans can catch Perez and the rest of the club back at home starting on Tuesday, July 28, when a six-game homestand at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park starts with a 10th Season T-Shirt Tuesday Giveaway to the first 500 fans of all ages, presented by McClure Mechanical Services. The giveaway is part of the T-Shirt Tuesday series, presented by The B94.5.
