Lowell Spinners News Release
LOWELL, MASS. - In a battle of the co-division leaders of the Stedler Division, the Lowell Spinners emerged victorious, topping the Tri-City ValleyCats, 2-1, Tuesday night.
Lowell (17-14) plated a run in the first inning after Luis Alexander Basabe led off the game inning with a double down the left field line. After Jeremy Rivera sacrificed him into scoring position and Andrew Benintendi walked to put runners at the corners, a Tate Matheny sacrifice fly gave the Spinners a 1-0 lead.
Tri-City (16-15) pulled even in the top of the second. After a one-out double by Kolbey Carpenter, a balk moved him to third and a two-out single by Bobby Wernes evened the score at one.
The Spinners quickly re-took the lead in the second, taking advantage of another lead-off double, this time by Chad De La Guerra. Josh Ockimey followed with an RBI single to right to give the Spinners a 2-1 lead that would hold for a final.
The ValleyCats would threaten in the fourth, loading the bases, but Dioscar Romero got out of the jam to preserve the lead. Similarly, Tri-City left a pair on in the sixth, two in the eighth and a runner in scoring position in the ninth.
The Spinners offense was paced by a pair of two-hit nights by Basabe and De La Guerra, each of whom doubled. Ockimey's RBI single was the only other hit.
Romero started and went the first four innings, struggling with his control. He allowed the one run on three hits and five walks, striking out a pair. Logan Boyd (1-0, 5.40) picked up the win with two scoreless, allowing two hits and walking a pair. He struck out three. Taylor Nunez allowed a hit in 1.2 scoreless while Bobby Poyner picked up his fourth save, dancing around a pair of hits in 1.1 scoreless innings.
The Spinners and ValleyCats meet again tomorrow for an 11:05am matinee special. Javier Rodriguez (0-1, 7.27) gets the ball for the Spinners and the Zooperstars perform in-game.
