-SPIKES START ROAD SWING AGAINST IRONBIRDS: Tonight, the State College Spikes continue their 10th Season as they take on the Aberdeen IronBirds in the opener of a three-game series at Ripken Stadium. The series also forms the first half of a six-game road trip for the Spikes, with a three-game set against Hudson Valley to follow. The Spikes are 8-17 all-time against the IronBirds, inclduing a 2-8 mark in games played at Ripken Stadium.
-LAST GAME: Leobaldo Pina delivered a walk-off single in the ninth as the State College Spikes battled back to defeat the Batavia Muckdogs, 6-5, on Monday night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. Pina's hit to deep right field with the bases loaded brought in Josh Swirchak with the winning run to give the Spikes their first walk-off win of the 2015 season. Swirchak also helped the Spikes get on the board with a two-run triple in the second that gave the State College the lead. Cole Lankford brought in two more runs with an eighth-inning single that extended the Spikes' advantage to three going into the ninth. However, four straight ninth-inning hits, including an RBI double by Travis Brewster and a game-tying double from Alexander Fernandez, let Batavia erase a 5-2 deficit and head into the bottom of the ninth tied. The Spikes would then get a single from Swirchak, a walk from Thomas Spitz and an infield single from Mike Pritchard to set up Pina's heroics.
-McKINNEY MAKES THE START FOR SPIKES: Left-hander Ian McKinney gets the ball for State College tonight in his sixth start of the year. The southpaw has racked up three consecutive victories, including a win in his last start at West Virginia in which he allowed five runs, but just two earned, on seven hits over five innings. McKinney also struck out six and walked two in his latest win, and has struck out at least four batters in each of his last four starts. Tonight marks just the second road start of the year for the Orlando, FL native.
-ALVARADO MAKES ABERDEEN DEBUT: Right-hander Cristian Alvarado makes his first New York-Penn League appearance tonight as he starts for the IronBirds. Alvarado went 5-0 with a 0.33 ERA in five appearances for the Rookie-level GCL Orioles spanning 27 innings. The Acarigua, Venezuela native struck out 20 batters and walked none during his time in the GCL this season. Alvarado split his time between the GCL and the Dominican Summer League last year, going 3-0 with a 0.36 ERA for the DSL Orioles before recording a 5.40 ERA and 1-2 record in the GCL in 2014.
-PEREZ NAMED NYPL PITCHER OF THE WEEK: Major League Baseball Advanced Media announced on Monday evening that State College Spikes pitcher Juan Perez has been named the New York-Penn League's Pitcher of the Week for the week of July 13-19, 2015. Perez garnered the honors after tying a Spikes single-game record with 10 strikeouts against the Batavia Muckdogs on Saturday over the course of seven shutout innings. The right-hander allowed just two hits and a walk during that time. A native of San Felipe, Venezuela, Perez is 3-1 with a 2.70 earned run average this season.
-GRAYSON DELIVERING BIG NUMBERS: Casey Grayson is still at or near the top of several leaderboards in the New York-Penn League. The University of Houston product is back to first in the NYPL in batting average with a .371 mark, and his .451 on-base percentage is tops in the league. Grayson also occupies spots in the NYPL's top five in hits (2nd, 36) and runs batted in (3rd, 21).
-SPIKE MARKS: Infielder Champ Rowland joined the Spikes yesterday after starting his pro career with the Rookie-level GCL Cardinals...Catcher Riley Drongesen, who signed with the Cardinals as a non-drafted free agent in 2015 out of Menlo College in California, was called up from Johnson City two days ago
