State College Spikes News Release

-SPIKES COMPLETE SUNDAY'S GAME, SERIES AGAINST TIGERS: The State College Spikes, who are number one in the New York-Penn League in batting average at .286 and ERA at 2.56, finish a six-game homestand at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park today with the completion of last night's suspended game against the Connecticut Tigers, followed by a seven-inning finale to the three-game set. Connecticut leads the suspended game, 2-1, with the bottom of the fifth inning about to start. State College has won three of the first four games of the homestand, including Saturday's thrilling victory. State College is 10-11 all-time against the Tigers, including games against the club when they were located in Oneonta, and 4-5 in games at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.

-LAST OFFICIAL GAME: David Washington smashed the first walk-off grand slam in Medlar Field at Lubrano Park history to give the State College Spikes an 8-5 win over the Connecticut Tigers in a wild back-and-forth contest on Saturday night. Washington drove the 0-1 pitch from Tanner Bailey over the center field wall for the game-winner in the ninth. The grand slam was his second of the 2013 season, making him the only player in Spikes history with two in one year. Washington ended the ninth 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles to go with his late heroics and a total of five runs batted in. The 6'5" big man now has six homers and 28 RBI in 30 games this year.

-PAULINO STARTS GAME TWO FOR SPIKES: Right-hander Jhonny Polanco is the current pitcher of record for the suspended game, having tossed a scoreless fifth inning last night, but right-hander Willy Paulino is set to go for game two today. Paulino is set to make his eighth appearance and third start of the year for State College. Last time out, the Dominican righty threw five shutout frames against Hudson Valley in a day game last Monday. Paulino gave up three hits and four walks, but struck out six. Paulino also got his first win of the season in the daytime on July 4 against Batavia.

-FIRST-ROUND PICK CRAWFORD SCHEDULED FOR START: Right-hander Jonathan Maciel is the pitcher of record for Connecticut in the supsended game, but the Tigers also have right-hander Jonathon Crawford, Detroit's first-round draft pick this season, at the ready for a game two start. Crawford has made five starts already this year, with none going longer than three innings. Last time out, Crawford went only one frame against Brooklyn, striking out one.

-RAMOS ON A TEAR FOR STATE COLLEGE: Steven Ramos is the hottest hitter in the New York-Penn League at the moment, despite his 12-game hit streak coming to a close. Ramos hit .533 (24-45) during the streak, and his .410 average will lead the NYPL once he gets back to the minimum plate appearances.

-SPIKE MARKS: Ronald Castillo is now 2nd in the NYPL in hitting with a .342 mark...Connecticut brings family ties to Central PA as infielder Patrick Leyland, son of Tigers manager Jim Leyland, and outfielder Ben Verlander, brother of Detroit Tigers pitcher Justin Verlander, are on the roster
