State College Spikes News Release

STATE COLLEGE, PA - The State College Spikes used four straight hits in the fifth inning to take the lead before the rain moved in and ended the game early, with the Spikes grabbing a 4-2 win in five innings over the Connecticut Tigers on Monday afternoon at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.

Despite State College (18-15) still being at bat with no outs when the game was called in the bottom of the fifth, the Spikes were awarded the victory per Rule 4.10 (c)(2), since both teams had come to bat five times and State College had outscored Connecticut (13-21).

The game was halted right after Carson Kelly had produced an RBI single to increase the Spikes' lead. Kelly had another big game for the Spikes, going 2-for-3 with two runs batted in after notching three hits in the game that was completed earlier on Monday.

David Washington also went 2-for-3, and his RBI single in the bottom of the fifth gave State College the lead. Bruce Caldwell also notched a pair of hits before Mason Katz pinch-hit for him in the fifth and added another single.

The Tigers had taken a 2-0 lead after an inning-and-a-half, but the Spikes fought back with Jimmy Bosco's run-scoring single in the second and Kelly's first RBI single in the third.

Willy Paulino (2-1) earned the win for State College with a five-inning complete game, allowing two runs on six hits and a walk while striking out six. It was the Spikes' first complete game since Nicolas Suero went six innings in a rain-shortened 5-2 loss at Jamestown on August 23, 2007.

Reliever Julio Felix (0-2) took the loss for the Tigers after yielding three runs on six hits and a walk over two innings.

The Spikes' win enabled them to take the series victory after dropping a 5-2 decision to Connecticut earlier in the day in the completion of Sunday's suspended game.

State College now heads to Niles, OH to start a three-game series with the Mahoning Valley Scrappers (Cleveland Indians) on Tuesday night at Eastwood Field. Left-hander Jimmy Reed (1-1) and right-hander Nick Petree (1-1) will team up in a "piggyback" tandem on the mound for State College against left-hander Kenny Mathews (0-1) in the 7:05 p.m. game.a
