State College Spikes News Release

STATE COLLEGE, PA - Carson Kelly picked up three hits for the third time in four games, but three solo homers and a Ben Verlander double spelled defeat for the State College Spikes in a 6-4 loss to the Connecticut Tigers on Monday in the completion of Sunday night's game at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.

The game, which was stopped on Sunday due to heavy rain and thunderstorms in the middle of the fifth inning, resumed with State College (17-15) batting in the bottom of the fourth inning. Connecticut (13-20) added to the lead with a solo home run by Brett Harrison in the seventh inning, and Verlander's two-base hit in the eighth plated two more runs.

Kelly, who notched back-to-back three-hit games on Thursday and Friday, collected another trio with an RBI double to bring in the Spikes' first run in the fourth inning on Sunday. Matthew Young also added an RBI double in the seventh inning for State College.

Spikes starter Arturo Reyes (0-1) took the loss after allowing solo home runs to Austin Schotts in the first inning and Tyler Gibson in the third. Reyes yielded a total of three hits over four innings of work.

Connecticut reliever Austin Pritcher (2-1) got the win after coming on once the game resumed and throwing 2 2/3 innings. Pritcher gave up a run on five hits and a walk while striking out two. Will LaMarche (1) closed the game for the Tigers with a one-hit ninth to earn the save. LaMarche recorded two strikeouts.

The two teams are now playing a seven-inning contest to complete their three-game series, with Willy Paulino (1-1) on the mound for the Spikes and Jonathon Crawford (0-1) on the hill for the Tigers.
