Big 3rd Inning Leads Vermont To 7-0 Win On Monday

BURLINGTON, VT --- The Lake Monsters scored a season-high six runs in the bottom of the third inning on three consecutive two-run base hits and four pitchers combined on a five-hit shutout as Vermont beat the Auburn Doubledays 7-0 in New York-Penn League action Monday night at historic Centennial Field.

The Lake Monsters jumped on top 1-0 in the second with as Ryan Huck scored reached on a throwing error and scored on a Jaycob Brugman RBI double down the rightfield line before each of the first six Vermont batters in the third inning all scored. The Lake Monsters loaded the bases on a Josh Miller single, Melvin Mercedes walk and Boog Powell bunt single before the three straight run-scoring hits.

B.J. Boyd knocked home the first two runs of the inning with a two-run double to right field and Tyler Marincov followed with a two-run line drive single to center against a drawn-in infield. Huck closed out the scoring with a two-run homer to left field for his third home run of the season. All six of the Vermont runs in the inning came off Auburn starter Ryan Ullman (0-1).

Vermont starter Kyle Finnegan (1-1) tossed six shutout innings, allowing just three hits with one walk and four strikeouts to earn his first professional victory. Relievers Lee Sosa, Kayvon Bahramzedeh (Lake Monsters debut) and Fernand Cruzado each recorded a scoreless inning as Vermont picked up its second shutout victory of the season.

Powell, Boyd and Brugman each had two hits for Vermont, which wrapped up the homestand with four wins in the six games. The Lake Monsters have now won two-of-three in each of their five three-game series played at Centennial Field this season (Vermont 11-6 at home and 16-18 overall).

The Lake Monsters head out on the road for a three-game series at Aberdeen before returning home to Centennial for a four-day, five-game homestand July 26-29 against Tri-City (Friday/Saturday) and Lowell (Sunday doubleheader/Monday).
