
Scrappers Pound Yankees to Win Series

Staten Island, NY - Who would have guessed that the thing the Mahoning Valley Scrappers needed to start turning things around this season was a trip to the Big Apple. The Scrappers capped off their 6 game road trip by pounding out 14 hits en route to a 8-2 thumping of the Staten Island Yankees on Monday. The win secured back to back series wins for the Scrappers who went 4-2 on the road trip.
The offense got the scoring started early for the second straight day. Cody Ferrell started the game with a single. He would score when Nellie Rodriguez reached on a throwing error. The Scrappers saw their lead vanish in the bottom of the second thanks to a walk, error and a wild pitch. With the Yankees up 2-1, Claudio Bautista wasted no time making sure that everyone knew it was going to be the Scrappers day. He launched the 2nd pitch of the inning high off the top of the scoreboard in leftfield to tie the game at 2-2. Rodriguez then doubled with 1 out and came in to score on Josh McAdams' RBI single to give the Scrappers back a lead that they would not surrender.
Overall on the day, the Scrappers offense pounded out 14 hits, the second time on the road trip that they recorded at least 13 hits. Leading the offensive attack was Ferrell, who reached base 3 times. Rodriguez, Paul Hendrix, Robel Garcia, Marin Cervenka, and Joel Mejia all added RBIs.
Dace Kime started the game and worked the first 2.2 innings. He allowed 3 hits and 2 runs, only 1 was earned. He walked 2 and struck out 3. Matt Whitehouse (2-0) followed Kime in the 3rd inning. Whitehouse worked 2.1 innings to pick up the win. He allowed 2 hits. Briely Puerta worked 2 scoreless innings as well. He allowed 3 hits and struck out 2. Trevor Frank finished off the final 2 innings. Frank did not allow a hit and struck out 2.
With the win, the Scrappers won back to back series for the first time since the won 6 straight games to sweep back to back series from June 28th-July 3rd of last season.
