
CT Tigers and Spikes Split Double Header

State College, PA - In the suspended game from Sunday night the Connecticut Tigers defeated the State College Spikes by a score of 5-2 at Medlar field at Lubrano Park Monday . Three solo homeruns was the difference in the game. CF Austin Schotts led the game off with a homerun to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead. In the third inning LF Tyler Gibson hit a solo homerun to make the score 2-0. In the seventh inning 3B Brett Harrison hit the third solo homerun of the game for the Tigers to take a 3-1 lead.
RF Ben Verlander (2-4) contributed for the Tigers as well picking up a pair of hits that included a two run double in the eighth inning that scored SS Curt Powell (1-4) and 2B Dominic Ficociello (0-3) to take a 5-2 lead. The Tigers were 2-5 with runners in scoring position and left only four men on base.
The Spikes got contributions from 3B Carson Kelly (3-4) who hit an RBI double in the fourth inning that scored 1B David Washington (1-2) to cut the deficit to 2-1. RF Matt Young (1-2) added an RBI double in the seventh inning that scored CF Steven Ramos (1-5) to cut the lead to 3-2. The Spikes struggled with runners in scoring position as they went 1-9 and left a total of 10 batters on base.
In game two the Spikes defeated the Tigers 4-2 in a rain shortened game that only lasted four and a half innings. The key hit of the game came in the bottom of the fifth inning on and RBI single by 1B David Washington (2-3) that scored SS Cesar Valera (1-3) to take a 3-2 lead. 3B Carson Kelly (2-3) added an RBI single to score PH Mason Katz (1-1) who pinched hit for 2B Bruce Cadewell (2-2) and made the score 4-2.
The Tigers offense didn't help themselves out as they went 1-8 with runners in scoring position and left six on base. In the second inning 2B Javier Azcona (1-2) had an RBI single that scored 3B Brett Harrison that gave the Tigers a 2-0 lead. SS Curt Powell (2-3) added to his hot streak picking up a pair of singles and a run scored.
1B Dominic Ficociello (1-1) left the game in the top of the first inning with an undisclosed injury on a stolen base attempt into second base. Ficociello was replaced by 1B Pat Leyland (1-2).
The Tigers and the Staten Island Yankees start a three-game series at Dodd Stadium tomorrow at 7:05 p.m. In game one LHP Joe Flattery (1-0, 2.70) gets the start for the Tigers. RHP Giovanny Gallegos (2-1, 2.53) gets the start for the Yankees. Pregame radio coverage begins at 6:50 pm. On AM 1310 WICH.
