State College Spikes News Release

NILES, Ohio - The State College Spikes stayed undefeated in extra-inning games this season as a passed ball in the 11th inning scored what proved to be the winning run in a 4-3 victory over the Mahoning Valley Scrappers on Monday night at Eastwood Field.

Tied at 3-3 in the tenth inning, the Spikes (21-29) withstood a bases-loaded, no-out situation by employing a five-man infield and forcing New York-Penn League batting leader Tyler Freeman to ground into a forceout at the plate, followed by a 1-2-3 double play off the bat of the NYPL's Player of the Month for July, Hosea Nelson.

Delvin Perez then scored standing up from third on the passed ball with two outs in the 11th to give the Spikes the led, and Kevin Hamman (5) struck out the side in order in the bottom half for his fifth save in as many opportunities.

The win made the Spikes 4-0 in extra-inning games this year, and extended their road winning streak to six games.

State College took the opening lead in the second when Edwin Figuera's fielder's choice brought in a run. Mahoning Valley (29-19) then tied the game in the second on Nelson's solo shot to left field, his seventh home run of the season.

The Scrappers nosed out in front on Tre Gantt's sacrifice fly to right in the fifth, then added to their advantage on a wild pitch to score Freeman in the sixth.

The Spikes tied the game in the seventh, though, as a Mahoning Valley error opened the door for Brady Whalen's RBI groundout, followed by a run-scoring single from Kevin Woodall, Jr.

State College reliever Cory Malcom (3-0) picked up the win with two scoreless innings of relief in the ninth and 10th innings. Malcom yielded just one intentional walk and struck out one batter in his time on the hill.

Scrappers reliever Erik Algarin (0-1) took the loss after giving up the Spikes' run, albeit an unearned run, in the 11th. Algarin allowed just one walk and recorded one strikeout.

Wadye Ynfante produced the Spikes' lone multi-hit game, and stole a base as well.

Spikes catcher Alexis Wilson threw one of two runners out on stolen base attempts, and picked Freeman off second base from behind the plate in the first.

Tuesday, the Spikes conclude their three-game series at Eastwood Field as they seek a sweep of the Scrappers. Right-hander Michael Baird (0-2) will get the ball for State College against Mahoning Valley right-hander Cameron Mingo (2-2).

Following the series against the Scrappers, the Spikes will return to Medlar Field at Lubrano Park for a three-game series against the West Virginia Black Bears (Pittsburgh Pirates) from August 8-10.
