Granville, W. Va. - CF Travis Swaggerty, IF Mike Gretler and P Cam Alldred have been selected to represent the West Virginia Black Bears as members of the South Roster in the 2018 New York-Penn League All-Star Game.
This is the 14th year of the New-York-Penn League's Midsummer Classic. This year's game will be hosted by the State College Spikes at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park in State College, Pennsylvania.
All-Star festivities will begin on August 13, including a meet and greet with baseball's future stars. The game will take place the following day August 14, with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
Travis Swaggerty CF
In his first season of professional baseball, the Pittsburgh Pirates' first round draft pick has demonstrated why he's ranked as the team's fourth ranked prospect. Selected tenth overall in the 2018 MLB Draft, the centerfielder was regarded for being the best five-tool prospects in his class. Swaggerty is the Black Bears' most consistent hitter, batting .277 in 31 games this season. He's also proven himself to be one of team's best power hitters, leading West Virginia in home runs (4) and total bases (55). He's also tied for second on the team in stolen bases (8) while commanding the outfield with his speed and big-time arm. Swaggerty joined the Black Bears after three years at the University of South Alabama, where he finished his collegiate career hitting .319 with 27 home runs and 121 RBIs.
Mike Gretler IF
Since joining the Black Bears after capturing a 2018 NCAA National Championship with the Oregon State Beavers, the Pirate's tenth round pick has been a welcome and productive addition to West Virginia's infield. Playing third base, shortstop and catcher this season, Gretler's versatility has made him an indispensable member of the clubhouse as player rotate through Pittsburgh's farm system. In 26 games, Gretler is hitting .272 with 14 RBIs, picking up 2 triples and 7 doubles. He's coming off of a fantastic senior season at Oregon State, hitting .305 with seven homers and 51 RBIs on the way to the school's first national title since 2007.
Cam Alldred P
Over halfway through the 2018 season, LHP Cam Alldred has separated himself as one of the best relievers in the New York-Penn League. In 14 appearances from the bullpen, the lefty is holding opposing hitter to an astonishing .174 batting average. He also leads the Black Bears in ERA (1.29) and WHIP (0.90), and hasn't allowed a run in his last 16 innings of work. Alldred has shown potential to climb quickly up Pittsburgh's minor league system as a reliever, but he's also demonstrated his potential as a starting pitcher. The Pirates selected Alldred in the 24th round of the 2018 MLB Draft out of Cincinnati. He started 13 games for the Bearcats in 2018, posting a 5-2 record with a 3.68 ERA.
