Five Spinners Named to All-Star Team

August 7, 2018 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
Lowell Spinners News Release

LOWELL, MA - For the third time in four seasons the Spinners will be sending five players to the New York-Penn League All-Star Game. Representing the Spinners will be outfielder Tyler Dearden, lefty reliever Rio Gomez, and infielders Korby Batesole, Devlin Granberg, and Xavier LeGrant.

Tyler Dearden has been reliable for the Spinners both in the field and at the plate all season long. In 39 games this season, Dearden has hit .297 and is tied for the team-lead with three home runs on the season. The 2017 29th-round pick is also the club's active leader in RBI this season with 19.

Gomez will actually not participate in the All-Star game as he was promoted to the Low-A Greenville Drive the same day he was named an All-Star. Out of the bullpen, the University of Arizona product has a 2-0 record with a 1.65 ERA. During his time in Lowell he ranked third in the NYPL in fewest base runners per nine innings with 7.7.

Korby Batesole, a 29th round pick in this year's draft out of Fresno State, has been quietly putting together one of the most productive seasons in the New York-Penn League. Though his power numbers won't raise any eyebrows (all 23 of his hits this season have been singles), Batesole is hitting .284 and at one point hit safely in 10 consecutive games. He has also flashed his highlight reel glove at third base this season.

Devlin Granberg came into his professional career as one of the most decorated collegiate players in the country. The sixth-rounder struggled out of the gate but got red-hot in July and hit .350 during that span. Granberg, who has split time between first base and the corner outfield, leads the Spinners in several major offensive categories including hits (43), runs (29), and doubles (12).

Xavier LeGrant has been a Swiss Army Knife for Lowell all season long. While playing three different infield positions this season he has also one of the most consistent hitters on the team with a .270 batting average and a pair of home runs and 15 RBI to boot. His hits seem to come in bunches as he has seven multi-hit games this season as well as a pair of three-hit games.

The All-Star Game will take place on Tuesday, August 13 in State College, PA, home of the Spikes. All five Spinners will represent the Northern All-Stars.
