South Bay Lakers News Release
EL SEGUNDO - The South Bay Lakers played their fourth game of the regular season against the Birmingham Squadron as they won, 128-98, on Saturday night. Devin Cannady led the Lakers (2-2) in scoring with 25 points. Kelan Martin paced the Squadron (1-5), scoring 22 points.
South Bay was led by guard Devin Cannady in the opening frame. The sharpshooter got off to a hot start, scoring 12 points in the first seven minutes of the game, finishing with 15 in the quarter. Nate Pierre-Louis gave the Lakers a great boost off the bench, posting four points, three rebounds and three blocks in just five minutes of play. South Bay carried a 38-19 advantage into the second period. A quick 9-3 run from the Squadron to start the second quarter cut South Bay's lead down to 13. The Lakers quickly regained control, taking a 60-44 lead into the break. L.J. Figueroa's strong second quarter gave him 14 points and seven rebounds at half. Squadron forward Feron Hunt led Birmingham in scoring with 16 points.
The Lakers picked up right where the left off to start the third. Five quick points from Cannady stretched lead out to 17, familiar territory for the team after they had just given up this same lead in the previous game. However, the Lakers continued their stellar play, building their lead to as many as 22. Javante McCoy's nine points led L.A. in the period. Riley LaChance led Birmingham with seven in the frame.
The fourth quarter was smooth sailing for South Bay, as they continued to compete until the final minutes. The Lakers advantage was as high as 36 behind strong performances from Bryce Hamilton, McCoy and Pierre-Louis. South Bay closed out the contest, 128-98.
Cannady put together a final line of 25 points, three rebounds, and two assists. Figueroa added 20 points, 10 rebounds and three assists. McCoy added 23 points off the bench, his highest scoring game since November 7. Pierre-Louis filled up the stat sheet, contributing 11 points, 10 rebounds, two assists, two steals and three blocks. For the Squadron, Martin and Javonte Smart put up 22 and 15 points respectively.
South Bay's next game will be against the Iowa Wolves on Monday, January 9, at 7:00pm from the UCLA Health Training Center.
