Bridgeport Islanders News Release

NORFOLK, VA - The American Hockey League's Bridgeport Sound Tigers, top affiliate of the National Hockey League's New York Islanders, beat the Norfolk Admirals 7-4 on the road Friday. The win was the first as a head coach for Sound Tigers bench boss for Dave Baseggio who was promoted to the position this past June after serving as an assistant coach for the team during its first four years (2001-05) of play.

After an 0 for 8 power play and 2 for 6 penalty kill in Wednesday's season-opening 8-1 road loss to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, the Sound Tigers went 3 for 7 on the power play and 5 for 5 on the penalty kill to take a 3-1 lead by the end of the first period Friday.

Jeremy Colliton scored the first goal of his professional career on a four-on-three advantage 2:11 into the game off assists from Justin Papineau and Allan Rourke, and Rob Collins tallied on a similar power play at 14:24 off assists from Kevin Colley and Rourke to make it 2-0.

Dustin Byfuglien pulled Norfolk to within 2-1 with a four-on-four goal off assists from Martin St. Pierre and Michal Barinka at 16:49, but Bruno Gervais regained the two-goal lead at 3-1 for the Sound Tigers with a power-play goal off an assist from Colley at 19:43.

The Admirals evened the score at 3-3 with a pair of five-on-three goals by Mark Cullen early in the middle frame. Cullen scored his first at 5:42 off assists from James Wisniewski and St. Pierre and his second at 8:18 off helpers from Nathan Barrett and Wisniewski, but the Sound Tigers went back ahead by two with a pair of even-strength markers.

Sean Bergenheim made it 4-3 Sound Tigers at 10:31 off assists from Papineau and Collins then Matt Koalska doubled the lead to 5-3 with the eventual game-winner off assists from David Masse and Vince Macri. Koalska took back a puck that had just been stolen from him then zipped up the ice and chipped home Masse's return feed on a give-and-go on the deciding play, which was completed just seconds before the lights in the arena went out, and referee Jeff Smith suspended play and sent both teams to their dressing rooms. When the teams returned from the early intermission, they finished the middle frame without any more scoring.

Colley made it 6-3 Sound Tigers just 4:53 into the third period off assists from Ryan Caldwell and Masse, but Norfolk pulled back to within a pair as Byfuglien notched his second four-on-four goal of the evening at 10:43 off assists from Wisniewski and Cullen to make it 6-4.

Colliton finished the scoring with his second goal of the contest off an assist from Masi Marjamaki, his first pro point, with 4:26 left to play.

Collins was the first star of the game, Colley the second, and Cullen the third. The Sound Tigers were 3 for 12 on the power play while the Admirals were 2 for 13 and had a 32-21 shots on goal advantage. Wade Dubielewicz earned the win with 28 saves while Adam Munro took the loss with 17 saves.

The Sound Tigers will play the Admirals in Norfolk again tomorrow at 7:15 p.m. The game will be web-cast live at www.soundtigers.com beginning at 7 p.m. Following this weekend's games in Norfolk, the Sound Tigers will finish a season-opening stretch of four straight road games when they visit the Binghamton Senators next Saturday, October 15th at 7:05 p.m. The Sound Tigers will open the home portion of the schedule on Saturday and Sunday, October 22nd and 23rd when they host the Portland Pirates and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins at Bridgeport's Arena at Harbor Yard.
