Brooks named River Rats captain

Albany N.Y. - The Albany River Rats announced that Defenseman Alex Brooks has been named the 10th Captain in franchise history. He will be joined by Assistant Captains Defenseman David Hale and Left Wing Tuomas Pihlman. Brooks, 29, is entering his fourth season with the River Rats and the New Jersey Devils organization after signing as a free agent. He served as an assistant captain during the 2004-05 campaign, notching six assists in 63 games. Brooks has played over 200 games with Albany and began his professional career with Jokerit Helsinki of the Finnish Elite League during the 2001-02 season. The Madison, Wisconsin native played four years of college hockey at the University of Wisconsin.

The River Rats open the 2005-06 regular season tomorrow night in a 7:30pm road contest against the Syracuse Crunch. The club will open the home portion of their schedule on October 15, 2005 against the defending Calder Cup champion Philadelphia Phantoms. The festivities begin at 11:00am with an Amusement Park Block Party featuring rides and attractions, while there will be a "Concourse Carnival" courtesy of Total Events at the 1:00pm game.

The Albany River Rats, set to begin their 13th season as a member of the American Hockey League, are owned and operated by Capital District Sports Inc., and serve as the primary affiliate New Jersey Devils.
