Tunik, who will turn 21 next month, was chosen by the Islanders in the second round, 53rd overall, in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft. The 6'2'' 200-pounder from Elektrostal, Russia had ten penalty minutes in four games with St. Petersburg SKA in his home country last season.
