Wolves Spoil Ak-Sar-Ben Knights Debut
October 7, 2005 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Abbotsford Heat News Release
Omaha, NE - The Chicago Wolves scored three powerplay goals en route to a 5-2 win over the Omaha Ak-Sar-Ben Knights on Friday night. The loss squelched the celebration of the Knights' first game in the American Hockey League, a game that saw the return of nine former Omaha Knights who played for the team during its previous 24 seasons. All nine were honored in a pre-game ceremony that included Knights of Ak-Sar-Ben Foundation President David Parker, Calgary Flames President and CEO Ken King, Calgary Vice President of Hockey Operations and CFO Mike Holditch, AHL President and CEO David Andrews and Omaha Ak-Sar-Ben Knights President Doug Soetaert.
The Wolves got powerplay goals from Brian Maloney and Mark Popovic to lead 2-0 after one. They tacked on an even-strength goal from Ramzi Abid and a five-on-three powerplay goal from Scott Barney to push their lead to 4-0 after two. Jim Slater scored just 39 seconds into the third period to make it 5-0, but the Knights responded quickly.
Warren Peters scored the first goal in Ak-Sar-Ben Knights' history, scooping up a turnover and beating goalie Adam Burkhoel just 12 seconds after Slater's goal. Tomi Maki scored his first goal of the season just 45 seconds later, tipping in a point shot by Mark Giordano to close the gap to 5-2. It would be as close as the Knights would get in spite of outshooting the Wolves 42-21 for the game.
The Knights finish their first weekend in the AHL on Saturday night when the visit the Iowa Stars at 7:05 p.m. All the action can be heard in Omaha on 1420 AM and worldwide on the web at omahaaksarbenknights.com.
The Knights return to home ice on Wednesday, October 12th when they host the Manitoba Moose at 7:00 p.m. Tickets for all Ak-Sar-Ben Knights' home games are on sale at the Omaha Civic Auditorium box office and all Ticketmaster outlets. Season tickets, group tickets and mini-plans are now on sale by calling the Knights at (402) 344-4625. For more information, visit the Ak-Sar-Ben Knights' web site at www.omahaaksarbenknights.com.
