Sound Tigers Win 4-1 In Hershey
November 21, 2004 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Bridgeport Islanders News Release
HERSHEY, PA - The American Hockey League's Bridgeport Sound Tigers, top affiliate of the National Hockey League's New York Islanders, took 39 shots on goal and were 9 for 9 on the penalty kill en route to a 4-1 road win over the Hershey Bears Saturday.
The Sound Tigers led 2-0 after the first 20 minutes equaling their season high for road goals in a period. Kevin Colley posted his second goal of the season redirecting a shot from behind the Hershey net at the 7:58 mark off assists from Chris Campoli and Matt Koalska. Sean Bergenheim then fired a wrist shot past Bears Goaltender Peter Budaj 2:14 later off an assist from Justin Mapletoft. The goal was Bergenheim's team-leading seventh of the season while the assist was Mapletoft's team-best tenth helper.
After each team cost itself a pair of second-period power plays on a series of overlapping penalties and advantages, Hershey got on the scoreboard with 4.3 seconds left in the middle frame when Jeff Ulmer tucked a rebound just past Sound Tigers Netminder Wade Dubielewicz for his third goal of the season. Martin Hlinka assisted on Ulmer's goal, which was scored just as the Bears' seventh power play expired.
Rob Collins, who scored the only goal in the Sound Tigers' 1-0 home win over the Providence Bruins this past Wednesday, intercepted a pass at his own blue line during a four-on-four situation and raced the length of the ice to beat Tom Lawson for his third goal of the season, unassisted, making it 3-1 with 1:53 left in the third period. Lawson had replaced Budaj at the start of the second period.
Hershey called timeout and pulled Lawson in favor of an extra attacker with just over a minute and a half to play, but Mapletoft stepped in front of a pass in the neutral zone and fired it into the empty net for his second goal and team-leading 12th point of the season with 7.7 seconds left to play to cap the scoring at 4-1.
Dubielewicz, who is now on a three-game win streak, was the first star of the game with 31 saves, Lawson was the second with 23 stops, and Koalska was the third. The Sound Tigers set a single-game season-high for shots finishing with a 39-31 advantage. They were also 0 for 5 on the power play.
The Sound Tigers will finish a stretch of three straight road games when they visit Binghamton Senators this coming Thursday at 6:05 p.m. They will return home to Bridgeport's Arena at Harbor Yard to host the Hartford Wolf Pack this coming Friday, November the 26th at 7:35 p.m. Both games will be broadcast live on 600 WICC-AM and at www.soundtigers.com.
