Worcester IceCats News Release
WORCESTER, MA- The Worcester IceCats battled hard but eventually dropped a 5-4 decision to the high-powered Manchester Monarchs yesterday afternoon at the DCU Center. Yannick Lehoux led Manchester with a goal and two assists, while Blake Evans tallied two goals and added an assist in the losing effort for the IceCats.
The Monarchs jumped out to a 2-0 lead before the game was six minutes old. Noah Clarke opened the scoring just 48 seconds after the opening face-off, and Dustin Brown scored on the power play at 5:25. However, the IceCats gained the momentum heading into the locker room when Evans put one past Manchester goaltender Mathieu Garon on the power play goal with 1:10 left in the period.
Brendan Brooks tied the game at two for Worcester at 3:42 of the 2nd period after taking a nice feed from Johnny Pohl. At 8:02, Worcester goalie Curtis Sanford had to leave the game due to injury. Fifty-five seconds later, Lehoux skated in on the left-wing and dribbled his own rebound past replacement Jason Bacashihua to put the Monarchs up, 3-2. âCats defenseman Aris Brimanis scored a shorthanded goal at the 16-minute mark to tie things up at three all.
The Monarchs scored two quick goals 1:31 apart early in the 3rd to take a 5-3 lead. Evans recorded his 100th point as an IceCat by scoring at 7:56 to pull the âCats within a goal, but Worcester was unable to get the equalizer.
Garon finished with 30 saves on 34 shots for Manchester to move his record to 10-1.
The IceCats record falls to 9-5-1-0 for 19 points. They next play on Wednesday, when they host Portland at the DCU Center for a 7:05 faceoff.
