Bridgeport Islanders News Release

BRIDGEPORT, CT - The American Hockey League's Bridgeport Sound Tigers, top affiliate of the National Hockey League's New York Islanders, tied the Philadelphia Phantoms 1-1 at home Friday as Goaltender Dieter Kochan made 31 saves including a second-period, penalty-shot stop.

After a scoreless first period, Philadelphia was awarded a penalty shot mid-way through the second period, but Kochan kept things tied at 0-0. He jabbed his stick out in front of the crease forcing the Phantoms' Kirby Law to shoot high and wide. It was the first penalty shot against on home ice in Sound Tigers' history.

Martin Kariya gave the Sound Tigers the first lead of the game at 1-0 with his first goal of the season, and first-ever with the team, at 14:08 of the middle period on assists from Justin Mapletoft and Mattias Timander. It was a power-play goal. However, Philadelphia tied the game at 1-1 with its own goal on the advantage just 3:36 later as a Peter White shot popped over Kochan. It was White's team-leading third goal and fifth point with John Slaney and Law notching the assists.

Neither team was able to score in the third period and overtime, and Kochan made another highlight-reel stop denying Philadelphia's Randy Jones with a diving stop in the final minute of the extra session.

Both teams were 1 for 5 on the power play, and Philadelphia had a 32-27 shots on goal advantage. Kochan was the first star of the game, Kariya the second and Phantoms' Goaltender Antero Niittymaki the third with a 26-save effort.

The Sound Tigers will visit the Hershey Bears tomorrow at 7 p.m. and host the Binghamton Senators Sunday at 4:05 p.m. Tomorrow's game will be web cast at www.soundtigers.com. Sunday's game will be broadcast live on 600 WICC-AM and at www.soundtigers.com.
