Springfield Falcons News Release
Springfield, MA â The Springfield Falcons improved their record on the young season to 2-1-0 by downing the Manchester Monarchs, 4-3, at the Springfield Civic Center on Friday night. Reigning AHL Player of the Week Jeff Taffe scored the game-winning goal and collected two assists in the win. Falcons right wing Peter Ferraro tallied a goal and an assist while goaltender Jean-Marc Pelletier made 31 saves to register his first victory of the campaign.
Springfield stormed out of the gate with three goals in a span of 2:38 in the first period. Defenseman Jeremiah McCarthy scored a power-play goal from the high slot at the 15:53 mark.
The Falcons then took advantage of a boarding penalty issued to Manchester right wing George Parros with a goal by Peter Ferraro at 18:10.
Veteran forward Gary Shuchuk, skating in his first game of the season, followed with a goal just 21 seconds later to make the score 3-0.
After replacing starting netminder Mathieu Chouinard with recent addition Matt Underhill, the Monarchs responded with a pair of goals early in the second frame. Center Jerred Smithson put Manchester on the scoreboard with a marker 15 seconds into the period.
Manchester made the score 3-2 after left wing Jeff Giuliano flipped a pass from behind the net to a streaking Ryan Flinn. Flinn one-timed the feed from between the face-off circles for his first goal of the season.
The Monarchs briefly tied the contest in the third period forward Pavel Rosa's shot eluded a sprawling Pelletier at 7:02. However, Taffe answered for the Falcons with his fifth goal of the season 31 seconds later.
Springfield converted two of six power-play chances in the game while killing off each of Manchester's four opportunities with the man advantage. The Falcons are now 13 for 13 in penalty-killing situations this season and are one of three teams in the AHL to not have surrendered a power-play goal.
The Falcons were outshot, 34-22, by the Monarchs in the game.
The Falcons will take to the ice of the Springfield Civic Center again on Saturday night to face P.J. Stock and the Boston Bruins. Game time is 7:35 p.m. Please call the Falcons team office at (413) 739-3344 for ticket information.
