Cleveland, OH - The Cleveland Barons shutout the Grand Rapids Griffins 2-0 at Gund Arena on Friday night. The night belonged to Kazakhstan native Dimitri Patzold, who was in net for the Barons. In his first North American appearance, the goaltender blanked a powerful Griffins team.
First Period...No scoring in the first period as the Barons out-shot the Griffins 10-5, but couldn't solve Griffins' goalie, Mark Lamothe. The Barons started Dimitri Patzold who is only the 5th goalkeeper to play in the Cleveland Barons 2-plus-years history. End of 1st period...Barons 0 Griffins 0 Shots on goal Barons 10 Griffins 5 Power Plays Barons 0-1 Griffins 0-2
Second Period...The Barons scored first when Tomas Plihal scored his first professional goal in his first professional game. Plihal took a pass from Craig Valette and went top shelf past Lamothe. The Barons controlled the play for most of the second period, but when called upon, Patzold was equal to the task stopping all 7 shots he faced in the period. Third Period... The lone goal of the period was scored with one second remaining as the Barons' Todd Harvey scored into the empty net. Dimitri Patzold stopped all seven shots he faced to complete the shutout. The Barons' defense was solid as it limited Grand Rapids to 19 shots and killed all 5 of their power plays.
