LOOKING AHEAD:
The Houston Aeros begin their Calder Cup championship defense with a pair of road games, in Milwaukee on Friday (7:00 CT) and in Grand Rapids on Saturday (7:30 ET, 6:30 CT). Both the Admirals and Griffins had their title hopes dashed by the Aeros in the 2003 postseason, with Houston sweeping Milwaukee in the conference quarterfinals and winning a Game 7 at Van Andel Arena to claim the Western Conference crown. This year's Aeros roster features some new blood, including rookie Matt Foy, who scored 61 goals in Ottawa (OHL) last year, but also a familiar face between the pipes in Johan Holmqvist, MVP of the Calder Cup 2003 Playoffs.

Hamilton takes on Binghamton on Friday (7:05 ET) in another playoff rematch, this time between last year's Eastern Conference finalists. The Bulldogs are off to a 1-2-0-0 start, but this week added to their lineup 2003 AHL All-Rookie defenseman Mike Komisarek, who owned a plus-27 rating last season. Binghamton is out of the gates with three straight wins, with another reigning All-Rookie selection, goaltender Ray Emery, stopping 85 of 89 shots on the young season. The game marks the return to Binghamton of Bulldogs head coach Doug Jarvis, who both played for and coached the AHL's Whalers in 1987-88.

Rochester and Syracuse renew their bitter rivalry on Saturday night (7:30 ET) when the Amerks pay a visit to the War Memorial at Oncenter. The New York neighbors have squared off exactly 100 times previously in the regular season, with Rochester owning a 50-37-13 edge. The Crunch enter the weekend with just a tie to their credit this year – a 4-4 deadlock with Hershey on Oct. 11 – while the Americans started 2003-04 with a win and an overtime loss. Goaltender Ryan Miller is back in Rochester after starting the year with parent Buffalo; the second-year pro was outstanding (7-1-2, 1.57, .943) against the Crunch in 2002-03.
