Bridgeport Islanders News Release

PROVIDENCE, RI - The American Hockey League's Bridgeport Sound Tigers, top affiliate of the National Hockey League's New York Islanders, lost 4-1 on the road to the Providence Bruins Friday in a game that saw the home team score in the opening minute of play and twice when shorthanded while the visitors had to delay their trip in for the game on the heels of a last-minute roster move. The loss snapped a three-game overall win streak and a four-game win streak on the road for the Sound Tigers who learned, just prior to leaving Bridgeport, that forward Travis Brigley had been reassigned by the Islanders to the AHL's Springfield Falcons with defenseman Harlan Pratt due to join the Sound Tigers from Springfield in return.

Providence got off to a quick start when Jeremy Reich scored his fifth goal of the season on a shot from just outside the Sound Tigers' blue line 40 seconds into the game off assists from Ben Guite and Jason MacDonald to make it 1-0.

The Bruins doubled their advantage to 2-0 ten seconds shy of the mid-point of the opening period on a shorthanded marker by Tyler Redenbach, his 12th goal on the season, off an assist from Zdenek Blatny who made a pretty move to side-step a Sound Tigers defender. Michael Schutte also assisted on the eventual game-winner.

Providence upped its lead to 3-0 with a power-play goal by Ben Walter, his eighth tally of the year, off assists from Nathan Robinson and Guite at 9:24 of the middle frame.

Sound Tigers starting goaltender Frederic Cloutier was replaced by Cody Rudkowsky after stopping 16 of the 19 shots he faced.

Sound Tigers all-star defenseman Bruno Gervais cut the lead to 3-1 with his 14th goal of the season, tying him for the team lead and putting him in first place among the league's defensemen, 10:58 into the third period off assists from Wyatt Smith, who is now on a three-game helper streak, and Jeff Hamilton, who is now tied for the AHL's longest, active point streak at 13 games.

After pulling Rudkowsky in favor of an extra attacker, the Sound Tigers went on a power play with just over a minute to play and called timeout prior to an offensive zone face-off, but P-Bruins defenseman Sean Curry sent a clearing attempt of the boards and the length of the ice for his second goal of the season, an unassisted empty-netter, with 53.5 seconds left to play to seal the win at 4-1.

Guite was the first star of the game, Providence netminder Jordan Sigalet was the second with 20 saves and Blatny was the third. The Bruins were 1 for 7 on the power play and had a 28-21 shots on goal advantage. The Sound Tigers were 1 for 5 on the power play. Rudkowsky stopped all eight shots he faced for the Sound Tiers.

The Sound Tigers will return to Bridgeport's Arena at Harbor Yard to host the Philadelphia Phantoms tomorrow, Saturday, January 28th, at 7:05 p.m. on Wade Dubielewicz Bobblehead giveaway night and the Syracuse Crunch this Sunday at 4:05 p.m. on Islanders 25th Anniversary puck giveaway night.
