Norfolk can't bear Hershey's five-goal third

The Hershey Bears scored six unanswered goals, including five in the third period, to defeat the Admirals 7-4 on Friday night at Scope.

Hershey got on the board first, as Mike Kompon scored with a screen shot as a Bears' power play expired at 3:19. Nathan Barrett tied the game five minutes after Kompon's goal on the power play. He skated the puck out from the corner in front of Bears' backstop Kirk Daubenspeck, waited to clear a sliding defender and sent a wrister low glove-side at 8:10. Two minutes later, Matt Keith scored an even strength goal at 10:29. Five minutes later, Shawn Thornton skated in short-handed on Daubenspeck two-on-one with James Wisniewski. Thornton deked a forehand before sliding a backhander beneath the goalie's pads at 14:50. Hershey replaced Daubenspeck with Frederic Cassivi after the Thornton goal. The Admirals took a 3-1 lead to the first intermission.

Martin St. Pierre gave the Admirals a three-goal lead at 6:26, scoring on a backhander off a feed from Thornton. Hershey drew to within two goals as Colin Forbes scored a four-on-four goal at 10:23. Norfolk took a 4-2 lead into the final frame.

The third period belonged to Hershey as they scored five unanswered goals in the period. Graham Mink (3:55), Mike Green (4:16), Forbes (PP, 6:48), Dave Steckel (PP, 10:43), and Lawrence Nycholat (PP, 16:45) scored to give Hershey a 7-4 victory.

Mike McKenna was saddled with the loss and turned aside 33 of 40 shots. Frederic Cassivi played the final two periods, stopping 27 of 39 shots en route to the win. Kirk Daubenspeck played most of the first stanza, saving 5 of 8 shots.

Norfolk was 1-5 on the power play while Hershey 3-12.
