Bridgeport Islanders News Release
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (Feb. 28, 2014) - The Bridgeport Sound Tigers defeated the Providence Bruins Friday by a score of 4-2. Joey Martin, Matt Donovan, Andrew Clark and John Persson all scored for the Sound Tigers, who extended their season-long winning streak to seven games. Anders Nilsson earned his 12th win of the season and made 31 saves in the victory.
The Bruins picked up the opening goal of the game late in the first period on a late-developing two-on-one. Anthony Camara came into the Sound Tigers zone on the right wing and found Moore driving up the middle. He deked to the backhand and slipped the puck past Nilsson to give the Bruins a 1-0 lead.
In the waning seconds of the first, however, Martin tied the score in his first game as a Sound Tiger. The Bruins looked to make one final rush up the ice, but Martin intercepted David Warsofksy's breakout pass. He had the puck in the slot before rifling a wrist shot past Bruins goaltender Niklas Svedberg to tie the score with 3.8 seconds remaining in the opening period.
The Sound Tigers earned a power play early in the second period, and made the most of it to take a 2-1 lead. The Sound Tigers entered the zone on the left wing as Andrew Clark took a shot towards the net. It hit traffic in front, but Donovan was there to crash the net and get it past Svedberg at the 3:20 mark of the second.
Later in the second period, Providence picked up the man-advantage, but once again it was the Sound Tigers who took advantage. A Bruins shot went wide and rimmed around the boards, where Clark picked it up on the right wing. He came into the Providence zone on a two-on-one with John Persson and finished it himself to make a two-goal Sound Tigers lead.
As time wound down in the second, the Sound Tigers notched another goal on Persson's team-leading 12th goal of the season. With the team on the power play once again, Persson was left alone at the top of the crease and jumped on a loose puck. He beat Svedberg with 28 seconds to play in the middle frame, and the Sound Tigers took a 4-1 lead into the second intermission.
With less than six minutes to play, former Sound Tiger Scott Campbell found the back of the net to cut the Sound Tigers lead to two. Campbell took a pass from Ben Youds at center point and, with traffic in front, was able to sneak it through traffic for his second goal of the season. But the three-goal second period was more than enough cushion for the Sound Tigers to hold on.
The Sound Tigers return home to Webster Bank Arena Saturday when they host the Worcester Sharks at 7 p.m. They'll take on the Utica Comets Sunday at 3 p.m. at home as well.
