Cleveland Monsters News Release
Stefan Elliott tied the game for the Monsters in the third period to force overtime, but the Lake Erie Monsters (23-25-0-6) fell 3-2 in a shootout to the Hamilton Bulldogs (24-25-1-4) Friday night at FirstOntario Centre in Hamilton, Ontario. Elliott and Michael Schumacher scored for the Monsters, who collect a point in the standings for the fifth time in the last six games. The Monsters are on the road again on Sunday when they take on the Toronto Marlies at 3:00 PM.
Michael Schumacher tipped home a Colin Smith centering pass to give the Monsters a 1-0 lead at 8:13 of the first period. The goal was the fourth of the season for Schumacher, and gives him a tally in back-to-back games. Before the period ended, however, Hamilton would tie the game when Sven Andrighetto received a pass from behind the net and snapped the puck top-shelf from a sharp angle at 17:31 of the first period.
The game remained tied at 1-1 until the late stages of the second period, when Hamilton's Greg Pateryn scored on a shot from the center of the Monsters blue line. The shot made it through the traffic in front of the Monsters goal and put the Bulldogs up 2-1 at 16:08 of the second period.
In the third period, Stefan Elliott tied the game for the Monsters on a wrist shot from the top of the right circle at the 7:37 mark. Elliott's ninth goal of the season made the score 2-2, and was assisted by Garrett Meurs and Mitchell Heard.
The game was tied 2-2 after regulation, and overtime did not yield a winner. In the shootout portion, the Bulldogs outscored the Monsters 2-1. Colin Smith scored in the shootout to improve to 8-11 in shootouts on the campaign, while Gabriel Dumont and Patrick Holland scored in the shootout for the Bulldogs to secure the win.
Pickard stopped 29 of 31 shots in the game and three of five shootout attempts; he is 13-14-4 on the season. Hamilton goalie Robert Mayer is 6-12-2 after stopping 30 of 32 shots and four of five Monsters shooters.
The Monsters visit Toronto Sunday at 3:00 PM in a game that airs live on AM 1420 WHK.
