Bridgeport Islanders News Release
SAN ANTONIO, TX - The American Hockey League's 2001-02 Regular Season Champion and Eastern Conference Playoff Champion Bridgeport Sound Tigers, top affiliate of the National Hockey League's New York Islanders, lost 2-1 on the road in their first-ever meeting with the expansion San Antonio Tuesday. The loss snapped the Sound Tigers' road unbeaten streak at four games, 3-0-1.
San Antonio opened the scoring mid-way through the first period on a power-play goal by Denis Shvidki, his second goal of the season, at 9:56 on assists from Jamie Rivers and Paul Elliot.
Shvidki's goal marked the second game in a row the Sound Tigers surrendered the first goal of the game while shorthanded for the first time. However, they then tied the score at 1-1 with an early, second-period, power-play goal for the second contest in a row as Eric Manlow notched his eighth goal of the year at the :27 mark of the middle period on assists from Brandon Smith and Jeff Hamilton.
San Antonio regained the lead at 2-1 on former Sound Tigers David Morisset's third goal of the year at 2:56 of the second period on an assist from Dave Gove.
The Sound Tigers pulled Goaltender Rick DiPietro in favor of an extra attacker with 1:31 left in the third period and went on the power play with 4.4 seconds to play. They appeared to have tied the game, but a shot by Brandon Smith entered the San Antonio net a fraction of a second after time expired and did not count as the tying goal.
The Sound Tigers finished the game 1 for 6 on the power play and 4 for 5 on the penalty kill. San Antonio had a 28-27 shots on goal advantage improving its winning streak to four games and unbeaten streak to 11 games at 6-0-3-2.
