Sound Tigers Extend Home Winning Streak
February 19, 2007 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Bridgeport Islanders News Release
The Bridgeport Sound Tigers went 2-1 this past week, extending their home winning streak to eight games to tie the franchise record. They continue a busy stretch of eight games in 10 days with home games this Tuesday and Wednesday, road games Friday and Saturday, and another home tilt on Sunday.
Weekly recap
The Sound Tigers split a home-and-home series with the Lowell Devils, winning 4-1 at home on Friday before falling 3-2 in Lowell on Saturday. On Sunday, the Sound Tigers returned to the Arena at Harbor Yard and blanked the visiting Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins 1-0.
Feb. 16 - Sound Tigers 4, Lowell Devils 1
The Sound Tigers erupted for three second-period goals and extended their winning streak to 12 games against Lowell teams, including eight against the former Lowell Lock Monsters. The Devils finally put an end to the streak the next night.
Feb. 17 - Lowell Devils 3, Sound Tigers 2
The Sound Tigers outshot an opponent for the first time in 11 games but came up short thanks to strong goaltending by Jordan Parise (34 saves).
Feb. 18 - Sound Tigers 1, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins 0
Billy Thompson kicked aside all 25 shots he faced to win a battle with Penguins' goaltender Andrew Penner (who also stopped 25 shots). Mark Wotton had the lone goal, his fifth of the season.
In the standings: The Sound Tigers are 27-21-1-4 and are in fourth place in the East Division. They improved to 14-5-0-1 since the start of calendar year 2007 and have points in 11 of 12 home games in that time.
Playoff race: The race for the playoffs has heated up and it's a rat race of sorts. The Sound Tigers and division rival Albany River Rats, who are chasing the Sound Tigers for the East Division's final playoff spot, will face-off five more times this season. The Sound Tigers hold a seven-point lead over Albany in the standings.
Streaking: Eric Boguniecki, who did not play Saturday or Sunday, still has a six-game points streak going. Brandon Nolan, who tallied an assist on Wotton's winner on Sunday, has points in five consecutive games.
Stars between the pipes: Goaltender Wade Dubielewicz got the No. 1 star of the game in Friday's win. He stopped 30 Lowell shots. Thompson's 25-save performance got him No. 1 star accolades Sunday.
Welcome aboard: Forward Ken Magowan and defenseman Nick Martens signed PTOs and joined the Sound Tigers over the weekend.
