Binghamton Senators News Release

LAST WEEK: The Senators (16-29-2-5, 39 pts.) were 1-1 in two divisional games last week, including a 4-1 win over first place Norfolk on Saturday night.

FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 16th @ WBS (0-7 L):

The Penguins put up a touchdown on the B-Sens Friday night, as winger Jean-Francois Jacques buried four markers to lead the offensive attack for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. After a scoreless first period, Jacques kicked-off the scoring at 1:58 of the second stanza with his first tally of the night. Jacques collected his second and third markers in a 41 second span between the end of the second period and the beginning of the final period.

Wingers Daniel Carcillo and Justin Filewich each added third-period goals. Jacques finished off his four-goal night at 13:36 of the third, giving the Penguins their second four-goal night in franchise history. The seven goals-against were a new high for netminder Jeff Glass, who also had 31 saves in the loss.

SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 17th vs. NORFOLK (4-1 W):

The B-Sens rebounded against first-place Norfolk on Saturday night in Elmira. One night after allowing seven goals, netminder Jeff Glass tied a career-high with 43 saves to lead Binghamton to a 4-1 win over the Admirals. Winger Cory Pecker had two markers, while center Matt Koalska converted on a penalty shot for just the second time in B-Sens history. The Senators took advantage of a Carl Corazzini hooking call late in the first period, as winger Cory Pecker took the feed from Charlie Cook. Pecker snapped a wrist shot past Corey Crawford as the backdoor was wide open. Adam Burish tied the game at 1 apiece late in the second period with his seventh tally of the season. Burish collected a rebound and smashed it past Jeff Glass. Leading scorer Jeff Heerema responded with his 25th markers of the year. Heerema snapped a wrist shot from just inside the right faceoff circle past Crawford. With the B-Sens leading 2-1 and the Admirals on the power play, netminder Jeff Glass made several highlight reel saves to hold the lead. Jeff Heerema collected the puck deep in the Binghamton zone and spotted Matt Koalska exiting the penalty box. Koalska took the pass and was subsequently dragged down from behind by a Norfolk defender. Koalska converted on the penalty shot, just the second successful penalty shot in B-Sens history, to extend the lead to two goals. Pecker tacked on a late empty-netter to finish off the scoring. The 43 saves by glass tied his career-high, as the goalie took first star honors for his performance between the pipes.

THIS WEEK: The Senators play four games in five days, including two against Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. Binghamton welcomes the first-place Manchester Monarchs to the Arena on Wednesday night. The Senators then welcome the Penguins to the Arena on Friday and Saturday before heading down I-81 for a Sunday game against the defending champion Hershey Bears.

SCOUTING REPORT

WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 21st vs. MANCHESTER (7:05):

Binghamton hosts Manchester for the first and only time this season, as the first-place Monarchs are 13-2 over their last fifteen games. The Senators defeated the Monarchs 5-4 in overtime back on Sunday, Oct. 29 as Josh Hennessy buried the game-winner just fifty-six seconds into overtime to secure the win. Hennessy's game winning goal capped a back and forth affair that featured a pair of lead changes and a combined six power play goals split evenly between the clubs. As rookie Andrew Ebbett sped into the Manchester zone, he turned the defenseman around, but chose to pass instead of shoot from the left circle. Ebbett centered for a breaking Hennessy who buried the shot past the glove hand of the Monarchs' Jason LaBarbera (31 saves). For Ebbett, it was second helper of the night as he extended his team leading point total to nine (2+7=9). Noah Clarke leads the Monarchs with 19 goals and 44 points, while goaltender Jason LaBarbera leads the AHL with 30 wins.

FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 23rd & SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 24th vs. WBS (7:05):

The Penguins hold a 3-1 advantage in the season series with the B-Sens. Jonathan leads Wilkes-Barre/Scranton with 43 points (22+21=43), while Daniel Carcillo has 20 markers on the season. Netminder Jeff Deslauriers ranks eighth in the league with a 2.36 goals-against-average. Deslauriers has been between the pipes for all three Penguin victories against the Senators. Binghamton defeated Wilkes-Barre/Scranton 6-5 in a shootout back on Nov. 25 at the Arena. Danny Bois (2+1=3) along with Grant Potulny (1+1=2) led the B-Sens comeback charge. Jeff Heerema netted the game-winning shootout marker.

SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 25th @ HERSHEY (5:00):

The Senators travel to Hershey for the first time this season, as the club is looking for their first victory over the defending champs. Hershey holds a 2-0 advantage in the season series. The Bears are led by Alexandre Giroux, as his 52 points and 32 goals are tops on the team. His ten power-play markers also are first on the team. The Senators fell to the Bears 1-0 in a shootout back on Jan. 12 at the Arena. The Senators rode their penalty kill, a unit that was a perfect nine for nine on the night. Netminder Kelly Guard turned in a top notch effort between the pipes, saving 39 shots for the B-Sens. Guard had several spectacular saves, including one early in the second period against Alexandre Giroux. Giroux came slashing in from the left post, fainted left and then right right on Guard. The 23-year-old goalie recovered from the initial fake and made the save lying on his back, with his left hand stretched as far as it could possibly stretch. The Bears had a 21-6 shot advantage through 27 minutes of play, but the B-Sens defense controlled the high-scoring Bears. The Senators appeared to score what would have been the game-winner at the 14:21 mark of the third period. A loose puck flopped around in front of the Bears crease, as four Senators had swipes at it. The puck trickled into the net, but not before a whistle halting play. Hershey was unable to capitalize on an Andy Hedlund high-sticking call at 18:45, as the B-Sens penalty kill once again rose to the challenge. Kyle Wilson netted the game-winning shootout tally, as the Bears collected two shootout markers. Netminder Maxime Daigneault turned away all four B-Sens' attempts to secure the 1-0 victory for the Bears.
