Bridgeport Islanders News Release
HARTFORD, CT - The American Hockey League's Bridgeport Sound Tigers, top affiliate of the National Hockey League's New York Islanders, lost 4-0 on the road for the second time in as many days Saturday as former teammate Stephen Valiquette made 33 saves to earn his second shutout of the season for the Hartford Wolf Pack.
Hartford took a 2-0 lead with a pair of first-period, power-play goals. Craig Weller opened the scoring with his seventh goal of the season off assists from Layne Ulmer and Alexandre Giroux at the 8:20 mark, and Giroux made it 2-0 with his team-leading 18th of the season, on a five-on-three advantage, with 4:02 left in the opening frame.
The Wolf Pack doubled their lead to 4-0 with a pair of second-period, even-strength goals as Ryan Hollweg scored his fifth of the season at the 4:46 mark off assists from Ulmer and Jozef Balej, and Dwight Helminen notched his first of the year 31 seconds past the mid-point of the game off assists from Giroux and Lucas Lawson.
Valiquette was particularly sharp in the second period as the Sound Tigers equaled a team, single-period, season high with 19 shots on goal.
Giroux was named the first star of the game, Valiquette the second and Helminen the third. Sound Tigers goaltender Wade Dubielewicz made 13 saves before being replaced at the start of the third period by Dieter Kochan, who stopped all three shots he faced.
Hartford was 2 for 8 on the power play and 9 for 9 on the penalty kill. The Sound Tigers had a 33-20 shots on goal advantage.
