Manchester Monarchs News Release
MANCHESTER, NH â Left wing Dustin Brown had the game-winning goal and goalie Adam Hauser had 29 saves as the Manchester Monarchs beat the Providence Bruins, 2-1, before a sold out (9,916) Verizon Wireless Arena crowd on Saturday night. The win was the Monarchs (28-7-3-1, 60 points) fourth straight over the Bruins (20-13-2-6, 48 points) and second in a row overall. With the victory, the Monarchs stayed one point ahead of the second place Hartford Wolf Pack in the American Hockey League's Atlantic Division. The Wolf Pack blanked the Bridgeport Sound Tigers, 4-0, on Saturday night.
With the loss, the Bruins dropped into a three-way tie for third place in the division with the Lowell Lock Monsters and Worcester IceCats.
Hauser (10-3-0) nailed down his 10th win of the season with five stops in the scoreless third period. Three of his wins have come against the Bruins this season.
The Monarchs led 2-1 after two periods of play thanks to the 17th goal of the season for left wing Dustin Brown. Brown, selected in the first-round (13th overall) by the Los Angeles Kings in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft, pumped a rebound past goaltender Hannu Toivonen (36 shots, 34 saves) at 17:24 of the second period. Defenseman Mike Weaver and center Michael Cammalleri each recorded assists on the play.
The Bruins tied the game at 1-1 with the ninth goal of the season for left wing Dan LaCouture, scored on a wrap-around 7:38 into the middle period. Defenseman Milan Jurcina and left wing David Gove assisted on the goal, which was the fourth for LaCouture in two games against the Monarchs this season.
The Monarchs led 1-0 after one period thanks to Cammalleri, who knifed a loose puck past Toivonen on a power play at 8:56. Brown and right wing Brad Smyth shared assists on Cammalleri's team-leading 25th goal of the season. Twleve of his goals have been scored with the Monarchs holding a power play advantage.
The Monarchs return to action when they visit the Portland Pirates at the Cumberland County Civic Center at 4:05 p.m. on Sunday, January 16. After that, they return home to host the Worcester IceCats at 7:05 p.m. at the Verizon Wireless Arena on Wednesday, January 19.
