Binghamton Senators News Release
BINGHAMTON - The Binghamton Senators put up four goals in the first period and added a fifth in the final frame on their way to a decisive 5-1 victory on Saturday night against the Rochester Americans.
Anton Volchenkov, Brian McGrattan, and Antoine Vermette (2) each scored goals in a very one-sided first period that gave the Sens a 4-0 lead heading into the intermission. Vermette's first goal, the team's third, came with the Sens short-handed while rookie Danny Bois was serving an interference minor.
McGrattan, the game's third star, has scored in each of the last two contests. His goal tonight, his fifth of the season, held up as the game winner.
Daniel Paille got the Amerks on the board with what would be their only goal of the contest coming at the 10:41 mark of the middle frame.
Sens' defenseman Christoph Schubert picked up his sixth goal of the season 10:20 into the third period to give his team a 5-1 lead.
Ray Emery continued his solid play while stopping 26 of 27 shots in the win for Binghamton. Ryan Miller started the game for the Amerks, but after allowing four goals on 16 shots in the first period he was pulled in favor of Tom Askey. Askey made 17 saves on 18 shots. Miller had only allowed one goal in his last three starts prior to tonight's game.
Binghamton's power-play failed to score a goal for the first time in the last five games. They finished the contest 0 for 3. Rochester was 0 for 8 with an extra skater.
The Sens return to action next Friday night when they welcome the Manchester Monarchs to Binghamton. The game is scheduled for a 7:05pm face-off. You can catch all of the action beginning at 6:35pm on 680-AM WINR. Tickets are still available and can be purchased by calling the Sens' hotline at 722-SENS or by visiting the Sens' executive office located on the third floor of the arena.
