Bridgeport Islanders News Release
BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (Feb. 22, 2013) - The Bridgeport Sound Tigers have announced their team captains for the remainder of the 2012-13 season.
First-year Sound Tiger Matt Watkins has been named the ninth captain in team history. Defensemen Jon Landry and Nathan McIver will serve as assistant captains for home games, while defenseman Ty Wishart and forward Blair Riley will wear the assistant captains' "A's" for road contests.
"We have a strong leadership group, and Matt Watkins is the leader of that group," Sound Tigers Head Coach Scott Pellerin said. "We're excited to have this opportunity to work with Matt, help him lead this team and make the push towards the playoffs."
Colin McDonald was named team captain earlier this season, but has been with the New York Islanders since his recall in mid-January. Watkins and all four assistant captains have all served as assistant captains with the Sound Tigers this season. This is Watkins' first captaincy of his professional career.
The Sound Tigers return to Webster Bank Arena on Saturday night against the Manchester Monarchs for You Can Play Night, the first night of its kind in support of the You Can Play Project that promotes equality in sports.
The Sound Tigers close out their weekend on Sunday afternoon against the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins at 3:00 p.m. for Mark Wotton Bobblehead Day. The first 2,000 fans in attendance will receive a Mark Wotton bobblehead courtesy of Newtown Savings Bank.
