Rampage Tripped up at Peoria, 5-0

PEORIA, IL - The San Antonio Rampage (23-24-1-4) fell behind early and could not recover as they were blanked by the Peoria Rivermen (23-22-4-3), 5-0, on Friday night at Carver Arena.

Despite the loss, the Rampage won the season series against Peoria for the second straight year, as they went 3-1-0-0 against the Rivermen. The Rampage are now 4-2-1-0 on the Rodeo Road Trip.

The Rampage outshot Peoria, 34-29, on the night but were unable to solve netminder Mike McKenna, who stopped all 34 shots he faced to issue the Rampage their first shutout loss since Jan. 5 at the Houston Aeros.

Goaltender Dov Grumet-Morris made 17 saves off 22 shots in two periods of work before being relieved by Brian Foster in the third period. Foster stopped all seven shots he faced in the frame. Entering the game, Grumet-Morris was undefeated in six starts against Peoria and had allowed only six total goals to the Rivermen in his career.

The Rampage outshot Peoria, 14-9, in the first period but defensive miscues gave the Rivermen several high-quality chances that they capitalized on.

Peoria struck first when Evgeny Grachev put one past Grumet-Morris at 3:58 of the first period. Less than two minutes later the Rivermen struck again when Anthony Nigro found himself open in the right circle and fired a shot into the back of the net.

Peoria's leading scorer, T.J. Hensick added to Peoria's lead at 4:26 of the second period when Adam Cracknell sent him a lead pass that allowed him to walk in alone on Grumet-Morris. Andrew Murray made it 4-0 when he found a rebound in front of the net and banged it home at 15:43 of the middle frame.

Hensick closed the scoring in the second period with his second goal of the night when he took advantage of a Rampage turnover and beat Grumet-Morris high and off the crossbar at 19:13 of the middle frame.

The Rampage finished the game 0-for-5 on the power play, while Peoria was 0-for-3 with the man advantage. The defeat marked only the first time this season the Rampage have lost by a five-goal margin.

San Antonio will go right back to work as they make their way to Michigan for the first of a two-game set with the Midwest division-leading Grand Rapids Griffins starting tomorrow (Saturday) at 6:00 p.m.
