WORCESTER, MA - The Manchester Monarchs scored five second period goals to power past the Worcester Sharks, 7-2, at the DCU Center on Friday night.
Manchester (23-24-2-3) is in fourth place in the Atlantic Division with 51 points. Worcester (23-21-1-5) is in third place in the Atlantic Division with 52 points.
Right wing Brandon Kozun gave the Monarchs the lead for good at 3-1 with a goal at 13:04 of the middle stanza. Left wing Colton Yellow Horn played the puck off the boards at the right point of the Monarchs zone. Kozun grabbed the loose puck and skated down the left wing on a two-on-one rush. Kozun faked pass and wristed a shot just under the cross bar on the stick side of Sharks netminder Harri Sateri. Center Jordan Weal also tallied an assist on Kozun's 17th goal of the season.
The Monarchs opened the scoring with a goal by Weal at 8:37 of the second period. Weal won a draw in the left wing face-off circle back to defenseman Andrew Bodnarchuk at the left point. Bodnarchuk fed Weal with a hard pass in front of the net. Weal settled the puck on his forehand and brought it to his back hand before flipping it past Sateri for his seventh goal of the season.
The Sharks tied the game at 1-1 with a power play goal by defenseman Matt Tennyson at 10:20 of the second period. Defenseman Matt Irwin fed the puck from the left point to Tennyson at the center point of the Monarchs zone. Tennyson settled the puck before firing a slap shot that beat Monarchs goaltender Martin Jones low on the glove side for the goal. Tennyson's fourth goal of the season was also assisted by center Bracken Kearns.
Manchester regained the lead with a power play goal by defenseman Bryan Rodney at 11:09 of the second period. Right wing Tyler Toffoli played the puck from inside the left wing face-off circle back to Rodney at the left point. Rodney wristed a shot that found its way through traffic and into the back of the net for the goal. Defenseman Nick Deslauriers also tallied an assist on Rodney's third goal of the season.
The Monarchs took a 4-1 lead with a goal by left wing Tanner Pearson at 13:36 of the second period. Center Linden Vey passed the puck from the left wing half wall back to Deslauriers at the left point. Deslauriers took a slap shot that Pearson deflected at the left doorstep and into the back of the net for his 14th goal of the season.
Toffoli gave the Monarchs 5-1 lead at 17:50 of the second period. Vey possessed the puck at the top of the left wing face-off circle before feeding Toffoli at the top of the right wing face-off circle. Toffoli took a wrist shot that produced a rebound at the bottom of the right wing face-off circle. Toffoli grabbed his own rebound and shot it into the back of the net for his 25th goal of the season.
Center Jon Matsumoto scored to make the score 5-2 in favor of the Monarchs at 4:46 of the third period. Kearns fed the puck to Matsumoto who broke into the Monarchs zone on a two-on-one advantage. Matsumoto faked pass and wristed a shot high on the glove side on Jones for the goal. Defenseman Tayler Doherty also tallied an assist on Matsumoto's 12th goal of the season.
Kozun extended the Monarchs lead to 6-2 at 12:47 of the third period. Weal played the puck from the right wing corner back to defenseman David Kolomatis at the right point. Kolomatis fired a slap shot that hit Yellow Horn and ricocheted to the left doorstep of the Sharks cage. Kozun grabbed the loose puck and slammed it home for his 18th goal of the season.
Vey capped the scoring for the Monarchs with a goal at 14:37 of the final frame. Pearson carried the puck down the left wing on a three-on-two rush. Pearson fed Vey between the top of the face-off circles. Vey wasted no time wristing a shot midway up on the glove side of Sateri for the goal. Jones also tallied an assist on Vey's 14th goal of the season
Jones (13-18-3) earned his 13th victory of the season stopping 29-of-31 shots. Sateri (10-11-2) took his 11th loss of the season making 24 saves on 31 shot.
Manchester went 1-for-6 on the power play. Worcester was 1-for-3 with the man advantage.
