Bowling Green Hot Rods News Release
Eastlake, Ohio -For a second consecutive night, the Bowling Green Hot Rods (Class-A/Tampa Bay Rays) rallied from a late deficit, but unlike Friday night, the Hot Rods were able to defeat the Lake County Captains (Cleveland Indians) on Saturday night, 6-3. The win secured a winning road trip for Bowling Green, who went 4-2.
For the first time in the three-game series, the Hot Rods jumped out to an early lead. Ariel Soriano laid down a bunt single perfectly down the third-base line. He stole second base, and was sent home when Yoel Araujo slammed a two-run home run to left-center field. It gave Bowling Green a 2-0 lead after two innings of play.
The Captains quickly tied the contest in the third. Cody Ferrell led off with an infield single, and would move to second on a wild pitch. Clint Frazier, the fifth-overall pick of the 2013 draft, then doubled to left field to drive Ferrell home. Paul Hendrix would follow with a hard-hit ball to third base. Ty Young was charged with an error, and Armando Araiza also picked up a miscue on the attempted tag-out of Frazier at the plate. He was safe, and his run tied the game at two.
Bowling Green starter Blake Snell was rolling in his six innings despite the rocky third inning, but a two-out home run by Paul Hendrix in the fifth gave Lake County a narrow 3-2 lead.
The Hot Rods rallied to tie the game in the seventh. With one out, Young doubled to right field. He was injured on the play, and Juniel Querecuto ran for him at second. One out later, Alexander Simon came through in the clutch with a solid base hit to right field, driving home Querecuto to tie the game.
Unlike Friday night, Bowling Green would complete the rally with three runs in the eighth. Kean Wong, who had recorded two hits earlier in the game, led off by reaching on an error. Armando Araiza followed with a walk, and both were bunted up 90 feet by Darryl George. The Captains elected to intentionally walk Granden Goetzman to try and setup a double play by loading the bases. Soriano took advantage and doubled down the left-field line to plate both Wong and Araiza. Goetzman, who ended up at third base on the play, would later score on a wild pitch to give the game it's final margin of 6-3.
Snell set a season-high with nine strikeouts, just one shy of his career best. He worked six innings, and allowed just two earned runs. He only issued one free pass in the no-decision. Brad Schreiber (1-2) tossed his best outing of the season, completing the game by retiring all nine batters he faced to earn the win.
The Hot Rods now return home to Bowling Green Ballpark on Monday night to open a three-game homestand at Bowling Green Ballpark. They'll welcome in the Lansing Lugnuts (Toronto Blue Jays) on Pepsi Buck Monday, and Pepsi products and hot dogs will be just one dollar. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
