COMSTOCK PARK, Mich. - D.J. Davis's go-ahead RBI single bounced off Montreal Robertson's throwing hand, pushing the Lansing Lugnuts (17-18) to a 5-2 extra-inning win over the first-place West Michigan Whitecaps (22-14) on Saturday night at Fifth Third Ballpark.
The game marked the first time this season that Lansing has gone to extra frames in a scheduled nine-inning contest.
With the victory, The Lugnuts avoided a three-game sweep at the hands of the Whitecaps, ending the Caps' six-game winning streak.
In the top of the 12th inning, Davis drove a single that deflected off of West Michigan reliever Montreal Robertson's (Loss, 1-2) reaching attemptand rolled into shallow left field, allowing Carlos Ramirez to score from second.
Lansing added two more runs in the inning when Mitch Nay grounded into a fielder's choice, bringing in Dickie Joe Thon. Attempting to turn the inning-ending double play, second baseman Javier Betancourt's throw sailed over first base, plating Davis as well.
A strong effort from the Lansing bullpen kept the game knotted at 2-2.
Brady Dragmire entered in the sixth inning, and held the Whitecaps to one hit with a walk and two strikeouts over the next three innings.
Scott Silverstein (Win, 3-1) added three more scoreless frames, allowing a hit and a walk while striking out three.
Griffin Murphy (Save, 5) pitched a 1-2-3 bottom of the 12th to close out the Lansing win.
Davis finished his three-hit night with a walk, an RBI, and a run scored.
The Lugnuts opened the scoring in the fourth inning when L.B. Dantzler singled to score Nay. West Michigan answered with a solo home run by Dominic Ficociello on the first pitch of the bottom half of the inning off of Lansing starter Tom Robson.
Lansing regained the lead in the fifth when Dickie Joe Thon ripped a single up the middle to bring Ramirez in from second, but West Michigan evened the score again in the bottom half of the inning when Wynton Bernard scored on a dropped fly ball by Davis.
After an off-day on Sunday, the Lugnuts head to Bowling Green, Ky. to open a three-game series with the Hot Rods on Monday night. Right-hander Alberto Tirado (1-0, 2.74) will start for Lansing, countered by Bowling Green righty Jacob Faria (2-1, 1.87).
