Great Lakes Loons News Release

SOUTH BEND, IN - The Great Lakes Loons' May struggles continued Saturday night in a 12-5 loss to the South Bend Silver Hawks. The Loons are now 1-9 in the fifth month.

The Loons scored the game's first two runs off starter Braden Shipley (2-2) on RBI extra base hits by Paul Hoenecke and Joey Curletta. But Loons starter Greg Harris (2-4) surrendered three in the first and four in the second. Daniel Palka's two-run triple drove Harris from the game after just 1 2/3 innings.

Victor Araujo held the Silver Hawks scoreless for 2 1/3 relief innings, with the exception of an inherited runner who scored on a wild pitch in the second.

South Bend's top of the order hitters did most of the game's damage. Jamie Westbrook reached base all five times up with two hits and three walks. Andrew Velazquez slugged a homer and a double. Cleanup man Palka drove in a game-high three.

Hoenecke, Curletta and Brandon Trinkwon notched two hits each for the Loons.

The game took a bizarre turn in the bottom of the eighth when Loons reliever Scott Barlow missed inside to Westbrook on a 2-2 offering and was ejected from the game. The ball did not hit Barlow and there did not appear to be obvious signs of ill feelings between the two teams. Loons manager Bill Haselman also was tossed by plate umpire Dave Attridge protesting Barlow's innocence.

Second baseman Brandon Trinkwon finished the game on the mound and recorded outs on the only two batters he faced.

For the second straight game, the Loons out-hit South Bend in a loss with 11 to the Silver Hawks' 10. But the Loons stranded eight on base, one night after leaving on a team record 17.

The Loons begin a seven-game homestand at Dow Diamond Monday night at 7:05pm versus the West Michigan Whitecaps on a Social Media Monday. Right-hander Jonathan Martinez (3-4, 4.03 ERA) matches up against righty Buck Farmer (4-2, 2.02). Tickets are available at Loons.com.

The Great Lakes Loons are an eighth-year Single-A partner of the Los Angeles Dodgers. For tickets and more information about the Loons, visit Loons.com, or call 989-837-BALL.
