Dragons Win, Close Gap on First Place

Dayton, Ohio - New Dragons outfielder Nick Benedetto drilled a home run and drove in four runs in his first game with the team as Dayton defeated the Fort Wayne TinCaps 6-4 on Saturday night. A crowd of 9,507 celebrated the Dragons 1,000th consecutive sell-out. Click here for the story on the sell-out streak milestone.

Benedetto, who joined the Dragons on Friday, collected three hits in his debut with the team. He belted a two-run homer on his first swing with the Dragons.

After Fort Wayne scored a single run in the top of the second inning, the Dragons responded with three runs in the bottom of the second. Avain Rachal walked with one out, stole second, and scored on a two-out triple by Carlton Daal. Benedetto followed with a two-run home run to left field to give the Dragons a 3-1.

Fort Wayne scored one run in the third to make it 3-2, but the Dragons responded with three runs in the bottom of the sixth. Benedetto had a two-run single in the inning and Tanner Rahier added an RBI infield single to make it 6-2. The TinCaps scored twice in the seventh to close out the scoring.

Dragons starting pitcher Nick Travieso (4-1) earned the win. He tossed five and two-thirds innings, allowing five hits and two runs with two walks and six strikeouts. Pedro Diaz pitched a perfect ninth inning to earn his first save.

The Dragons collected 14 hits, their most in a game since May 2nd. In addition to Benedetto's three hits, they received two from Rahier, Daal, Jon Matthews, Jamodrick McGruder, and Sammy Diaz.

The win improved the Dragons record to 21-14. They gained a full game on first place West Michigan and pulled to within one-half game of first place. The Dragons took two-out-of-three in the series with Fort Wayne.

The Dragons do not play on Sunday. They return to action at Fifth Third Field at 7:00 p.m. on Monday against the South Bend Silver Hawks. Daniel Wright (2-1, 1.67) will start for Dayton.
