Altoona Curve News Release
CURVE, PA - Every batter in the Altoona lineup recorded a hit on Sunday afternoon, but the Curve's efforts fell short as Somerset took a high-scoring affair, 12-8, at Peoples Natural Gas Field.
Altoona recorded 13 hits in the loss, one shy of their season-high of 14. The Curve's scoring featured a five-run seventh inning with home runs from Brendt Citta and Andres Alvarez. Trailing 12-3 at the time, Nick Gonzales and Liover Peguero opened the frame with back-to-back base hits, with Peguero smacking his 11th double of the season. Gonzales scored on a Blake Sabol groundout before Citta hit the two-run shot off former Curve reliever Steven Jennings.
Jennings then walked Aaron Shackelford before Alvarez hit the second two-run shot of the inning to make it a 12-8 game. Kyle Zurak entered the contest and walked Lolo Sanchez before Tucupita Marcano hit a single to put two on-base for the Curve. He then settled in to strikeout the next two batters to end the scoring affair.
Somerset had numerous multi-run innings of their own, including two runs in the fifth, five in the sixth, and four in the seventh. The two runs in the fifth came off Curve reliever Noe Toribio, who gave up two hits and struck out three in two innings to take the loss.
Austin Roberts entered to pitch the sixth but could not record an out. He gave up back-to-back lead-off singles before Derek Dietrich reached base on a strikeout to load the bases. Michael Beltre then hit an RBI-single before Chad Bell scored two more with a single of his own. Oliver Dunn then reached on a fielder's choice, scoring two on the play with one unearned on a throwing error from Peguero. Will Kobos then entered the contest and recorded three outs to end the frame.
Brad Case took the seventh for the Curve and gave up a lead-off home run to Jeisson Rosario. Later in the frame, he surrendered a second home run to Dunn, a three-run shot. Case allowed four runs in 1.2 innings. Enmanuel Mejia tossed 1.1 scoreless frames to close out the game.
Luis Ortiz made the start for Altoona, allowing one run on a solo home run by Bell in the third inning. He struck out five batters in three innings in the outing. Somerset starter Ken Waldichuk earned the win, allowing two runs on six hits in five innings of work. He allowed two in the fourth inning on RBI-singles by Shackelford and Sanchez.
Alvarez recorded three hits for the Curve, with Marcano and Gonzales each recording two. Citta and Alvarez each had two runs batted in in the loss for the Curve. Jared Triolo made his outfield debut in the contest, getting the start in left field. The loss clinched the fourth losing series of the season for Altoona, who went 2-4 on the week against the Patriots.
The Curve will remain home to begin a six-game series with the Richmond Flying Squirrels, Double-A affiliate of the San Francisco Giants, on Tuesday night at 6:00 p.m. RHP Kyle Nicolas will take the ball for Altoona, while RHP Gray Fenter will be on the mound for Richmond.
